The Voice In The Well by Vivek Aiyyar
Page 2 of 3 Who was she? What did she want? A messenger from the OTHER side? The invoker
of a tragic past.? A messiah of love? I heard the distinct ring of her bangles
as she moved slightly. The suddenly she raised her right hand and beckoned me
slowly. Every call increased the sound of the bangles. THE BANGLES!!! THE
BANGLES!!! THE BANGLES!!!
I woke up with a start .The room was dark .I ran to the window, the well
stood there teasingly. The blood shot to my brains and I started thinking.
"Tonight a strange story to you I will tell" "About the specter I saw near a
well" "The well that lies near the place I dwell" "The old monument that would
be my gateway to hell"
I was stunned. I was rhyming again. I ransacked my luggage for something to
write it on.
"Beneath the mango tree it stood" "In the depths of darkness, far removed
from good" "That night I clearly remember when she first appeared" "The peace
was broken, forever I stood disturbed"
I checked the time. It was 2:30 a.m I had found it!!! Finally!!! The jinx is
broken!! The jinx is broken!!!
I took my book outside and sat below the street lamp just beside my newfound
muse. The cricket sang merrily while an owl started at me in an amazed way. The
sweet wet smell of grass enclosed me.
"Clearly I remember her voice" "I keep hearing it, I have no choice" "In the
depths of my dreams she rises" "And she sings the song that this heart
despises"
Suddenly I heard the snap of a twig as though somebody had moved. I stopped
for a second wondering whether to continue writing the next day. I had this
uneasy feeling that I was being watched. But I knew I had to continue, I had to
get it done that night.
"Was ever a man so tormented" "My…….."
And then I heard it. It was the unmistakable rustle of bangles. It came from
the other side of the well. I ran to the other side."Kaun hey?".The night
remained silent mockingly. I walked back to my book not daring to look into the
well.
"Was ever a man so tormented?" "Did ever any eyes such a sight see?" "My
soul is ravaged by her words" I hear her voice, but her speech is absurd"
The poem needed a killer finish. Who was she? Why was she communicating with
me? Suddenly, a breeze blew and the trees in view swayed gently. Almost as if
it came upon the breeze I heard a whisper "The well. Look in the well for the
answers you seek" Who was this? Who was reading my mind? Fear slowly began to
creep over my heart. But I decide to play along. I peered into the well. At
first it seemed normal enough
"Often into the well I have looked for a sign," "Into its still waters I
have gazed from early morn to late night" "What secrets it hides in its breast
who is to say?" "It's occupant I wish to meet, that's what I crave"
"Will you not appear again? Little- one" "Just one meeting…."
The bangles sang just behind me!!!.I turned around with a start. No one.
Silence.Silence.A death like silence. I had made up my mind. This was the last
stanza. Enough is enough. I'll complete it tomorrow. It was 3:30 a.m by
then.
"Will you not appear again? Little-one" "Just one meeting and I will be
gone" "What vexes you child of the nigh" "Your body gone, but your soul stays
in sight"
I checked the time again. 4:00 a.m .1 hour to sunlight. One hour and I am
through. I am through. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Vivek Aiyyar, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
