The Consequences (5 ratings) by Christian Ashgan
Page 2 of 2 When I woke up, the room was dark. I could spot a few stars through the single
window on my room's wall which meant that my eye-sight was back to normal. I
was hungry and thirsty and tired and virtually lost in my senses for I had
mastered all of them again. I could see and hear; the smell of damp, heavy,
fortress air surrounded me while the sensation of the clean, but rough sheet
tickled my back. It was overwhelming so I took a moment to get used to it. I
was thinking now about whether to get out of bed or not. I could yell for
someone to come but I just wasn't used to doing that, it made me feel like I
was in need of help and aid, as if disabled. I always did things by myself. So,
I sat up on the bed with a tremendous amount of effort and slowly started to
get up on my feet. The floor was stony and cold but somehow it felt good, it
stirred up my senses a little more. I could manage to walk, but very slowly.
Walking to the door and opening them was my first goal and was soon
accomplished. I emerged in a hallway which my room was at the end of (that
saved me the trouble of deciding which way to go) and I started down the hall,
towards a door on the other end of it. It took a while, but as I finally
reached the wooden surface of the door and applied pressure on the knob thus
opening it, I felt truly victorious... almost triumphant! I found myself on an
indoor balcony above a great dinning room. The hall was actually surrounded by
this balcony, like a sort of a viewing gallery. A large staircase to my left
was leading down to the room where Master Nawor and his friend were already
sitting at the long table, completely alone, no servants or guards. They must
have known each other for a long time to be sitting by themselves like that,
with confidence and no fear of one another, as is often the case with wizards.
It looked like they were discussing something fairly important and I was the
one that interrupted.
«Ah, Yamdo, my «lively» friend! I knew you were going to join us on your own
sooner or later, that's why I didn't send for you. Come, dinner is already
served, as you can see. You must be starving!» and at those words, my belly
began to rumble as never before - it was demanding nourishment! I went down
without replying. I had to take one step at a time, struggling with each. When
I finally arrived, I took a seat indicated by my master, between the two of
them.
«I want you to meet my old college-friend, baron Dairym Od. Dairym, this is
my faithful companion and eternal comrade, Yamdo Dashean.» Nawor introduced us.
«And now, let's get to eating and as we go along I will tell you the tale I
promised you, of what happened and of what is going to happen.»
«It is a gripping story, believe you me. I tell you, it is a true forest of
events and occurences. And all of it is true! Hah!» added the second
sorcerer.
«Yes, yes. You are undoubtedly dying of curiosity, aren't you?» master said
and I tried to reply but I couldn't. My voice was still disobedient! I simply
looked at my master and he told me:
«That's right, you cannot yet talk. Wait a few more days, my friend, it is
all perfectly normal after what you've been through» he said it in a sad voice
and looked down as he did, then raised his stare to look at me. All too
dramatic. I knew that memories of pain and suffering were now flashing in his
mind. «Sit, eat and relax and let me tell you about the past three months.» I
could only open my eyes and mouth wide with amazement and utter surprise. Had I
been out of it for three months?! I couldn't have been lying in a bed for that
long because of a punch! The happenings in the siege of Benthez had dire
consequneces on me... and on others, I fear.
