A War With Humanity by Ryan Bailey
Page 2 of 3 We both managed to stay in good standing with grades as well as the drill
sergeants. There was one sergeant that both John and I both took a liking to,
DS Conroy.
He was the teacher that pushes you to be your best and you can’t stand it.
He brings out the best in you if you like it or not. Several of my classmates
chose the hard way, and thus received extra "fun" every day. I would often see
them outside running in the rain for hours, but no one could argue that they
weren’t the best they could be. DS Conroy would not let you slack off, he held
you to your standard every time, not something easy to accept when you are mad
at everything and can’t begin to explain it. On the outside we all hated him,
but I don’t know how I could have survived without him.
One day before his class, I went in early for help on an astronomy problem
on last night’s homework. I walked into his classroom and was awestruck at what
I saw. The headlines flashing across the video screen were horrifying.
"What’s going on?" I asked panicked.
"It’s those stupid Coalition jack asses." he sneered; lately a lot of
animosity towards the aliens was surfacing. They had taken over one of the
neighboring provinces, Taiwuk. It was a place with more than its share of
problems. No one really cared about it until something started going wrong. The
Coalition had taken over the area without even a bullet fired.
"What does the Union have to say about this?" I asked.
"They’re preparing for war, and you know what that means." He replied.
I knew all to well what that meant. It meant millions of soldiers like me
were about to go into action against the Coalition who was no match for us.
That is what I first thought.
When the now Coalition first arrived, their technology was eons behind ours.
Their ships were comparable to those in the atomic age. But we had a common
enemy: Nari. The Nari were of the same race of the aliens and lived on one of
their moons. They had come to our universe before and attempted to destroy our
largest city, Qari. Needless to say they were no match for the force of the
UPA, and all was peaceful and no further contact from them for centuries. The
Coalition appeared and we regained our planetary hate for them. And soon we
learned of the war between the Coalition and the Nari.
The war between the Nari and the Coalition was extremely one sided in favor
of the Nari. The Coalition simply did not have the technology or the manpower
to overcome this threat. In all of the Universal Union’s infinite wisdom, we
gave them technology. All was forgotten about what was given to them because it
still gave them no advantage if they ever decided to attack any of the UPA
protected states. Apparently, we all underestimated the ingenuity of the
Coalition.
The technology boost was all the Coalition needed to start making new
technology. The UU still looked the other way, and now the tides had turned.
Taiwuk was only the first province that was conquered. Now the financially
struggling nation of the People’s Republic of Britain was now under attack by
the Coalition. And the responsibility of defending it laid in the over
confident hands of the UPA. The UPA was outmatched. The technology in the
weapons was simply too great. All UPA forces were pushed back to one little
island, one that I had known so dearly. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Ryan Bailey, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
