"But I know now what the purpose of mankind is Richard." He voice a little shaky. "We are the underdog, the one’s no one ever thought anything good would ever come from. But that is where they are wrong, that is the reason we exist. One day, countless millennia from now, we will be the reformers of the entire Universe. This young and innocent race will bring order to the rest. We will become the one’s that save it all." I felt my heart ache at this old man’s dreams for us. I believed in him unconditionally.

"We’re going to beat them." I said to him. A smile appeared on him again.

"I know you will Lieutenant." He gave me a slap on the shoulder. Then he saluted me. I saluted back. "You come back safe to us soldier."

"I will sir." With that he turned and walked back into the base. I felt happy and sad at once. Happy at what he had said would be humanities purpose one day, and sad that it won’t arrive for generations. Suddenly I heard the familiar roar of the station alarms. A loud siren that also sounded like the end of the world. Within minutes the entire base was full of life.

"All ready to man stations." Said a woman’s voice over the intercom system. "Blue Stripe forty-fifth and Mac One Air Rangers to Launch pad seven..." This was it now. The course of the next day would determine the future of human civilization. By the time I was called to my station, hundreds were positioned in different areas of the base.

"Lieutenant Richard Swift..." The voice blared. "Please report to Dock Bay nine."

"Looks like no rest for us Richard." I looked to my left. It was Daniel.

"Daniel!" I smiled and shook his hand. "No time son, we have to fight while we’re still strong." He smiled, he was carrying an Omni Canon, a lot more devastating then the MAT 56. "Where are you headed off to?"

"I’ve been sent to battle the Egaji with your regiment."

"Is that right? With you on my side I know the Egaji don’t stand a chance." He smiled. Ever since this war started, I never had time for a family. The military was my family now. I really felt that Daniel and the others were my sons and daughters. We reached the entrance of Dock Bay nine.

"I’ll see you at the landing point Daniel. Keep the others in line."

"I will sir."

"Death is the natural progression of life." Said Commander Troy. By the time I got there he, the other Elect and hundred’s of other soldiers were paying good attention. "One must not fear it, but understand it." I looked around, the faces of the soldiers were unwavering. I now saw first hand how the Elect could raise hope out of the ashes. "Look unto the memories of your mothers and fathers. Look unto the hopes of your brothers and sisters. And look unto the future of your sons and daughters." He paused for a second.

"For the last decade we have been in this together. We have fought as one great family, as one consciousness. This foe has jumped from world to world, colony to colony; they have for so long yearned to find the Earth. And now that they have found it, we will make it their worst regret!" Everybody gave one thunderous cheer. Commander Troy raised his ZX 33, like some king would raise his sword before a great charge. "This is Earth’s mightiest hour. Let it shine into eternity!" The roar that came was even louder. The feeling of unity was unreal. Everything trembled.
