Together (9 ratings) by Michael Bishop
Page 7 of 7 The young woman sat there watching him as his charge carried him into
battle. From the spring in his step, she saw that some miracle had given him
some power, power that he would need if he were to be victorious. The soldiers
must have been as physically exhausted as the warrior, but they showed no sign
of it. At the sight of their foe coming towards them they halted and cast their
spears. However, they were too slow and their aim was poor. The warrior though,
moved like lightening; his sword parrying a blow from one soldier before biting
through the his armor.
Then the magic faded as swiftly as it had come and it was all over. By now
the young woman had regained enough strength with which to run. Still, she just
sat there as her man was hacked to pieces before her eyes. She prayed to the
gods to save him, may be raise him up so that he could still win the battle.
However, her words passed them by and they remained silent.
So she ran through her mind the future before her if she fled now and saw it
long and gray with herself fated never to see Cathbar again until he was
reborn. And she compared that with the short time of bliss that they had had
together and she had to steel herself at the memory. Her mind told her that she
could meet another and learn to love again. But, her heart also spoke and said
that it would never be the same. Then it reminded her of the vows that Cathbar
and she had made. So, she opened her soul and prayed again.
"O Lugh, please forgive for what I must do. You gave me the gift of life,
but it is nothing now for I can not make it without my man."
The soldiers came charging up the path towards her, baying as they did so,
As they did so, she stood up and ran up the slope ahead of them. Then, she
leapt off the cliff.
