Random Sci Fi #1 (7 ratings) by Mike Bozich
Page 1 of 1 The Winds had picked up; sand was ripping across the plains, tearing at
everything it came across. I wondered how he was going to bring her in.
"The damned thing is landing; it wasn’t due for a week!"
"What!"
I didn’t know if she had heard me or not, not as if it mattered now, they
were here a week ahead of time and we weren’t even ready for them.
"I said that damned ship is landing already!"
"I know it’s landing, what am I supposed to do about it?"
Dumb as a rock…
"Prep the panels, get our damned rifles out, and put on something to
eat!"
I was getting a little more than annoyed now, what could possess him to land
so early, and why the hell would he touch down here, he was supposed to be half
way across the system?
"I have a bad feeling about this!"
"You too, Jesus I thought I was the only one!"
She always had something sarcastic to say, but I couldn’t let it bother me
now, I charged up the rifle and was headed out the door just as it touched
down. Some describe it as beautiful, others think it is horrible, I couldn’t
care less; I have seen ships touch down thousands of times and it just kept
getting less and less interesting each time.
"Commander," I had been trying to get the damned ship communications uplink
to work for days, I thought I had a week left but no he had to go and land.
"Commander, Commander, Jim, answer damnit!" I gave the SCU a strong whack, good
now I had static, at least that meant he was receiving.
"Commander, look I don’t know what possessed you guys to come and land this
early, but you know we just aren’t ready fo..."
"Shut up Steve, we got some damn hot cargo on the ship, we need you on and
it off, you have five minutes, captain Maynard out!"
Hot cargo? This wasn’t sounding too good; at this point I probably would
have given a limb just to find out what happened.
The dust had been rising for awhile now, and our view was severely limited,
but even with that his ship stood out, it was a mechanized monster standing
over 40 feet tall and 500 feet long, ugly as sin but graceful in it’s own way.
The cargo bay had already been opened; he must have done it coming in because
it wasn’t a quick process. I still can’t believe I was able to get the Power
loader up and out that quick, I must have been more frightened than I thought.
"Ok sir got it all loaded out, open that door and we’ll get yah out of those
flight suits."
"Get aboard Steve, were got to get off this rock quick, we got suits for
you, hurry!"
I started running, this was bad, what the hell had he done this time?
"What the hell did you do this time?"
"We played around and pissed off some privateer, he ran us into a damned
Commodities Checkpoint and reported us pirates, then sent in the god damned
Navy Steve."
Times like this I wished I had never associated with this guy, if they
caught up to us we would probably be killed in the "Boarding and Inspection
Process" they seem to love ever so much.
I approached the doors, and I swiftly flung myself through the hatch, they
called me to the front and I suited up. It wouldn’t take long for us to break
clear of the planets gravity and from what I could overhear they lost the navy
guys about 23 light-years back, or so they thought. By the time I got seated
and belted the klaxons were already beginning to sound.
"Target locks 50 trigs out!" They Began to yell.
"Arc Light clip ships at 221x311y!" They continued.
"Jump gate Blockade!" Now it was getting bad, they hardly seemed worried.
Well this was crappy; yeah I had a good run with this guy, made some cash
and made some friends. Guess I could take my last seconds to reflect on all of
the noble and meaningful things I have done.
"Damnit…"
