I’d love to be able to come, honey!
"The secretary of Felson &Co. invites you to a concert on
street 1001."
"Ciao, Agatha! Where have you been lately?" cried Falco in
surprise.
"You won’t guess! I’ve just returned from the cinema. I
thought of calling you. What are you doing? Don’t you get out?"
"I’ve got a lot to work!"
"You’re missing a great concert!" shouted Agatha to cover the
street noise. Bunk Johnson, Richard M. Jones, Alphonse Picou are invited!
Excellent! I saw them! They were just downloading their instruments out of the
trucks. They are all here. I even talked to some of them. They were thrilled we
have a Dixieland band, too. They were enchanted. I hope it won’t rain. On the
first drop, their travel is gone."
"Id’ love to be able to come, honey! Haven’t you read the
newspapers? I’ve got a case."
"The Parliament attack?"
"It wasn’t an attack, honey, it wasn’t!"
Cell 24533 is on transmission
Falco shuts his eyes again. He’s concentrating. He put his
legs on the modest desk. A bright circle grows around his forehead. A soft
buzz. Behind his eye-lids a screen turns on.
Frame images. Zoom.
"I’m on" the cellular thought of Falco flies away.
"Bip, bip, bip! Cell 24533 is on transmission…"
Corruption and perversities in Parliament
Picture 1: Senator Gregorian gets out of a yellow cab. He’s
got his hat covering his eyes. He goes down to the basement. He’s shocked by
Falco’s stained glass window. He knocks on the door. "Yes", the answer
comes.
Picture 2: the two men shake hands, while Senator Gregorian
asks in whisper if the office is safe. "No problem it’s safe" says Falco,
encouraging him.
Picture 3: "Mr. Falco, the Parliament is threatened by
corruption and perversities". "I don’t doubt", answers Falco.
The Ocean overflows where you can’t imagine
Being content in a certain way, Falco asks cell 24533 to
decouple itself, and he activates cell 654. New pictures. Mixture. Senator
Gregorian asking Falco to help him reveal the outrageous corruption and
perversities. Senator Gregorian stopping a cab. Senator Gregorian making love
to his wife.
Senator Gregorian expressing his disagreement, in a TV-show,
with a view to the law projects forbidding Dixieland music in the whole
archipelago. Senator Gregorian talking to other Parliamentary colleagues, with
conviction. Senator Gregorian yawning, bored, on the last Parliament meeting.
Senator Gregorian, during a break, showing to those in opposition some photos
and documents proving the corruption and perversities of the presidents of the
Senate and of the House of Representatives. Stop. A split image.
A few banners. Then, the ocean overflowing in men’s toilet on
the end of the corridor. Where you can get out from the meeting room.
Falco meditates watching a homer pigeon.
Opening his eyes, Falco whistled in admiration. The people
from Channel 7 would offer him a fortune for this information! The ocean!
Overflowing into the House of Parliament through a space and time duct
measuring only two meters wide! What a trouble for the cops with all those
algae and seashells on the corridors! He should review the image, to zoom it!
He should follow Senator Gregorian step by step on the short
way from the meeting room to the men’s toilet. Then he should establish
precisely the details. The birth of the duct. Senator’s reaction.
The withdrawal of the duct Who did this and why? An attempt?
No way. All this was terribly complicated. Besides, the present has been
disturbed. How could you explain, then, the meeting with H.G. Wells and the
concert performed by Dixieland bands in 1917? How? Who? Why?! Or maybe Senator
Gregorian was incidentally on the duct route.
Falco looks on the window, no direction. He’s wiping his
forehead. A homer pigeon floats in the air. Because of the temporal troubles,
it appears and disappears once in a while.
Falco smiles. Suddenly, wrinkles appear and disappear on his
face. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Ovidiu Bufnila, sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author.
