Alone (14 ratings) by Stephen e. Burkey
Page 3 of 3 "We finally decided to bring you back and tell you"
"Tell me? Tell me what!" I said getting more and more anxious with every
moment.
"Well, what we have to tell you is that with all of these medical marvels,
genetic engineering and the like; well I am afraid to tell you, but here is
what happened. In the year 2070 the "Gay gene" was found. I am afraid the
politicians of the time took advantage of this knowledge and, well used the
discovery for their own gain"
"Used it for their own gain?" I yelled "what in the hell are you talking
about!"
"Well Mister Goings, these radical people took this knowledge and used it to
appease the constituents who did not agree with certain lifestyles."
"I, I still don’t understand" I stammered
"Well Mister Goings, what I am trying to tell you is, I am afraid that you
are, well you are the last one of your kind on earth"
"What are you talking about" I yelled. "The last of my kind?"
"Mister Goings, I am sorry" he said looking down. "You are the last gay man
on earth.
"WHAT!" I exclaimed with total disbelief. How can this be! It doesn’t make
any sense. I ran out of the facility, running, running as fast as I could. I
ran into town. The buildings are all clean, the air is so fresh. They are all
different though. Nothing is as I remembered it.
I walked into my old neighborhood. Gone were the familiar places. The bars
where I once talked and drank with my friends were gone, all gone. Everywhere
that I went, all of the places that I once knew had vanished.
Then, suddenly my friend’s voices echoed through my mind. Reaching back to
me from all of those years ago. "Try to be happy" they said. "Just find someone
to love and live your life" Those words seem so wise now.
Feeling defeated I walked back to the facility. I walked back into my room
and I then sank down into my chair. Shocked, dazed and numb and thought "I have
never been so………. alone."
