...End Program (18 ratings) by Adrian Carter
Page 1 of 4 I'm really sorry you should have to be reading this Kathryn, but at this
moment things have become so difficult for me I can't see any way of going on.
I only hope you can forgive me for what I've done and try to find a way to
expose the dangers of what we have been working with and what I daresay has
already began to happen to other people.
I was so happy when the company asked me to head up their software division,
after two years with the company I was proud that they had enough faith in my
talents to put me in such a position of responsibility. If I had known what was
going to happen I would have not only turned their offer down but I would have
quit the company that same day. I just didn't look far enough ahead I was
blinded by my own ambition and I guess the chance to make a difference.
You were never really into the computer stuff so I'll try and tell you
what’s been going on without going into my usual stream of techno babble. I
know that could be a royal pain in the ass sometimes not just for you, but
everybody I guess. Sometimes I just didn't know how to switch off, a little bit
like the machines I was working with in some respects.
Scott approached me with the job offer three months ago, you know that
already but you need to be filled in from the beginning for this to make any
sense. Again as you know I made up my mind on the spot, the chance to be
working at the top of the tree in the company’s development section was a
chance I felt couldn't be passed up on.
I figured I would finally have the budget to start writing software and
building hardware that would make a difference. I know, I know there I go again
blinded by my ideals, but you know what I am like. You of all people know that
better than anyone I've ever met.
I started the following week in a new section of the building, they call it
The Vault. It's essentially a place where all the company’s new ideas are put
together in their early stages. I swear to God you've never seen such a place,
so much stuff, so far ahead of its time it's incredible. I was like a kid in a
candy store I could pretty much take on whatever project to oversee, I hadn't
been this fired up in years.
I guess the problem was I took on the wrong project.
The company had been working on a device for the last five years, they
claimed it would enable even the most computer illiterate person able to use a
computer like an expert within an hour. I was sceptical, I mean who wouldn't be
even with all the latest gadgets to make computers user friendly I still know
people who were capable of screwing things up if they pressed the right
buttons.
The project was designed a little like the Virtual Reality stuff that
cropped up in the nineties, you remember when we went to the Expo show in
California. They were showing all those crazy video games where you had to wear
a big clunky helmet which would magically transfer you into a virtual world. I
was impressed at the time, you were too as I recall we both figured it would be
fun to have something like that in the house, that was until we saw the price
tag. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Adrian Carter , sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author.
