The Cosmic Beach by Frankie Catena

The waves came up softly on the shore. They didn't crash, but you could hear
them each time they arrived. The sound was peaceful and quite mood-setting.
Ripples and remnants of water spread out over the soft sand every time. Frankie
put his feet into the sand. It was quite comfortable.
Looking out into the ocean before him gave him a feeling he had never felt
before. The vision was absolutely clear. Not a bit of haze fogged his view. It
was as if his own eyes had healed from years of wear and tear on a polluted
world. The ocean moved and surged before him, and, although there was no sun,
it glowed with a blue aura about it and in it. The water itself was beyond
clear, as the ocean floor could be seen if one wanted to see it.
He looked up into an unworldly sky. It was absolutely clear and crisp, far
more so than any night sky anywhere on Earth. Millions upon millions of stars
dotted this before-unseen sky in a fashion as though it were a painting.
Designs and images were scattered here and there, ones that could not be seen
from a polluted sky, even if it were only tainted a small bit.
A shooting star flew across the sky.
Every star was a wonder to look at. They did not just stand and shine, but
the light from them danced. It was as though you could see that the gases that
composed these stars were moving, as they were. The light from all of them
moved in a pattern as though this night sky was an ocean, and this celestial
light was the water with waves of its own.
He turned his view from the ocean and sky before him to the sand and trees
behind him. It was also a sight to behold. He knew, from walking on it before,
that the entirety of the sand was incredibly soft, even where it had not been
touched by the silky, clear water. It glowed with a golden brilliance, but not
so bright as to hurt the eyes. Rather, it accentuated the atmosphere set by the
starry, ocean-like sky.
The trees beyond were ones never seen before by Frankie. They came in many
different shapes- circles, triangles, squares, hearts, and straight up and
down. They came in many sizes- extraordinarily small, like a rock on the
ground, mid sized, and some were magnificently huge like tall, swaying
skyscrapers. Each tree bore fruit, but not ones like Frankie had ever seen or
imagined. They were crystal in shape and look. They were clear, and they too
emit a bit of blue light. They were not hard, though, as you would expect from
first glance. They were soft, yet firm. Each one had a different level of
warmth, but how and why were questions not worth asking.
Another shooting star flew across the sky.
Frankie turned back towards the ocean and walked to his original sitting
spot. He had never felt more content at heart, but something was still missing.
This was a dream world built for him, but the center of his desires and dreams
was not visible anywhere.
Water came up on the shore and covered his foot for a moment. As it receded,
he could feel a feeling that could only be described as a warmth and coolness
in the very nerves of his foot which transformed into a nostalgic, peaceful
feeling that ran through the rest of his entire body, one part at a time, until
it settled in his heart. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Frankie Catena, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
