A Philosophical look into life and reality

A short story

Presant...

5:49 AM

The sounds and smells of the street twelve stories below lingered into Naomis' bedroom as she layed sprawled across her small spring mattress barely asleep. Faint car horns, cigarette smoke, cheap perfume, and the smell of fast food filled the small room, The screen of her computer dimly lit the foreground, the light revealed only a chair and clothes scattered across the carpeted floor. A weak ray of sun forced its way through the blinds and onto the opposite wall, Birds nesting on nearby buildings began to chirp, and the world awoke, to yet another day.

Naomis' alarm clock went off at six o' clock She sat up and rubbed her eyes, half asleep, and rolled out of bed, stumbling into the kitchen. She opened the freezer door looking for something easy to make not really in the mood to do any sort of preparation. She tossed a t.v. dinner into the microwave and collapsed onto her living room couch. A glass of water she had left on the coffee table from the day before caught her eye, she was momentarily mesmorised by the by the light refracting in all different directions as it hit the glass, the phone rang, averting her attention. "Hello," naomi said as she held the phone close to her ear. No one answered she said it again, still no resopnse, she began to pull the phone away until she heard a noise Naomi listened again, she could make out what sounded like a an echoed whisper. "Is anyone there?" she said bringing the phone closer. The whisper got louder but she still couldn't make out any words, then a second voice rang in, and a third, then a fourth, and more to follow, each one saying somthing different, Carrying on a conversation with one of the other. The voices got gradually louder, Naomi was confused and curious, she kept listening, and they kept getting louder until the became a sudden scream, startled she dropped the phone, she picked it up and listened again, but all that was heard was a dial tone.

7:36 AM

Naomi walked into her bedroom intent on taking her mind off the earlier event. The air was thick and heavy, everything seemed oblivious for a second, like nothing had mattered, drifting off into her own little world. Naomi sat down on her bed, and looked around at the mess she called a room, it needed to be cleaned but she never really found the time to get around to it, and when she did she neglected the fact that it did indeed need to be cleaned and left it as it was.

Naomi heard a beep escape from her computer not four feet away, "damn," she said under her breath realizing that she had once againg forgotten to turn off her computer befor she fell asleep. The screen went black, not surprised she walked over to examine what was wrong. "Guess the thing finally died on me," she said with a sigh. She took a closer look only to see that the power was still on, something must be wrong with the monitor Naomi figured. there was another beep, this one louder and more startling, Naomi jumped back, " What"s going on with this thing?" she murmered.
