Homemade Once Upon A Times by June Renee Cottingham

Jack was a only youngin. His family was so poor they couldn’t afford to have
no more kids at least that's what they told Jack when he put in to get a lil
brother for Christmas. Them people was smart too far as that goes. The daddy
was a preacher and he was loved by everyone. He didn’t just pop up for Sunday
dinner, he waited till he got invited. Usually after his sermons on God and
reaping what you sew, he never waited long before the congregation ever one of
them would get a good case of the guilty conscience and half of the church
members would grab hold of him and tell him to come to the house, they just
would not take no for no answer.Jack was raised to eat off the land and to plow
and work by the sweat over his eye brows. He was strong as a ox but Lord that
child had a set of chicken legs on him that wouldn’t wait. His mama stuffed him
full of biscuits and gravy and she'd take him and half hog tie him and pour
castor oil down him in hopes of ridding him of worms, but he aint had any, he
was just under developed.
One afternoon Jack went off to a bible camp off of Brunswick and he met up
with some boys his own age. One of them was from up in the mountains and his
bunch had strolled through looking for work in the area. Jack and that boy made
friends and Jack learned how to smoke them cigarettes his new friend had, and
how to spit like a camel. By the time Jack went on home he was learnt a lot of
things that he must have thought was bad since he aint spoke one word of it to
his daddy or mama. Jack knew that they didn’t think 'bakker was Gods will, but
all the neighbors who grew it had enough money for seven and even eight head of
youngin’s so it must have paid pretty darn good! He went on a plowing and
working and on the edge of the bottom field where daddy aint had a chance to
tend in a coons age, Jack decided to do evil. He slipped a handful of them
cigarettes seeds from his old buddy the mountain man into that fresh soil. It
took to that dirt pretty good and before long Jack had him a crop of smoke that
was fit for a King!
Before long it was time to pick it and sell it so he made a deal with old
man Hewey to take his truck load to Thomasville if he could let him take his
new 'bakker too. Hewey was needing a driver and that fine preachers youngin was
bout big enough to see over the wheel and yeah, he'd do al right. Off Jack went
and proud as the day was long. After all the jarring and bouncing to the
farmers market, all of that 'bakker got mixed up and well, Jack had to take a
loss on most of his harvest for that trip. That year 'bakker prices went sky
high and in was in demand like you cant imagine. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 June Renee Cottingham, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
