THE PRESENT
THE PHONE CALL
Steven Sanderson was deeply sleeping at his house in the northern region of
the state of Utah. It was late, about 3:00 in the morning. He had been asleep
for only about 5 hours now, meaning that he went to bed at 10:00 PM. Steven had
been studying all night long for exams in college, he’d been there 2 years now
and it was still, to him, as tough as ever. He was about 27 years old. After
leaving high school, he had first just wondered around freely, feeling as if he
were a runaway dog. He knew he wanted to go to college, but he just wasn’t
ready. But only a few years after high school, Steven forced himself to get
enrolled for a college in his home state of Utah. It wasn’t hard for him, he
had good grades all his life, never got in trouble, and had an interesting
career choice: paleontology. Paleontology is the study of prehistoric life,
which involves unearthing fossils from the grounds of Earth. He wasn’t much of
a digger, but he was absolutely fascinated with prehistoric life… especially
it’s anima
ls. He didn’t just like dinosaurs, he liked mammoths, saber tooth tigers,
prehistoric fish, and other things like that. He was totally obsessed with
them, studied everything about them like crazy, and all his life he only had
one wish: that he could see these things alive… and in their natural
habitat.
It was right now when something odd happened: the phone next to him (on a
table, next to his bed) started ringing. A phone call? At this early in the
morning?
It took 5 rings before Steven finally woke up, almost scared by the ringing.
His brownish- blonde hair was slightly messed up, and his greenish-blue eyes
looked sleepy and worn out. It was like the life was out of him. Usually,
though, he was full of life, always excited, and full of energy. Though he
looked slouchy right at the moment, and seemed as if he had been through hell,
in day, he was different. He has good looks, good build, and qualities that
make him very likeable. But right now… this early in the morning, he was not a
pretty site.
"God…. who is it?" Steven groaned, while he slowly lifted his arm to grab
the phone across from him at the table.
He put the phone to his ear, and in a very tired voice, he said, "Eh….
hello?"
"Hey Steven," a voice said, "Sorry for calling this early in the
morning…"
"Damn straight about that!" Steven disturbingly (Yet still sleepily)
said.
"Now, now… don’t get mad at me, I have very important reasoning for calling
this early," the voice said. Steven then recognized who the caller was.
His name was Robert Jones, also known as Dr. Jones. He’s one of Steven’s
family friends. Dr. Jones was 5 years older than Steven. He began college at
the age of 14. He was a genius, very kind, and brotherly to Steven. Now 32
years old, Dr. Jones works with governmental activities (Most of which are
top-secret).
But Steven wasn’t completely happy to hear from him… he was almost shocked!
He hadn’t seen Robert in years, ever since he was 9! That was almost 18 years
ago! Steven always wondered what had happened to him. The last he ever heard
from him was when he got a letter from Robert 4 years ago, saying that he’d be
too busy with his government work to talk to him. Steven understood, he knew
that government work was important. He knew that Robert would be busy with
loads of things. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Derrick Davis, sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author.
