The Clown Prince of Fools (16 ratings) by Craig Dolphin
Page 1 of 1 Whispers flew around the crowded court
Maids tittered behind delicate hands
Stableboys chuckled and yammered
With the endless-questing hounds.
Silks fluttered & eyelashes swept down, gracefully
Knights in drunken recline
Ate another bite between guffaws
And servants went about their tasks
Although their wont was to grin
As foppishly as the courtiers who swanned about gaudily.
The Queen of Hearts did not smile
As her court looked mockingly on
At the newfound stranger approaching her throne, wearily
Resplendent in once shining armour--now dented and bashed
Grime-ridden and covered in ash,
His sword broken & silent at his side
Shattered shield without device
No magnificent steed to bear him in
Or wondrous profile, or nobility, to win love easily.
No one knew of the battles he'd fought
In the heart of the setting sun
To vanquish dragons of hate, and armies of bitterness
Against that scarlet sky, turning blue with night
Against them all, and won!
No one knew, except the Queen of Hearts
For whom he'd fought so valiantly
And still the perfumed popinjays sneered,
And whispered importantly, noses uplifted in derision
Against the silken red and blue
As the stranger halted at last
Before the throne, below Her throne
Looking for approval, longing for love,
Mindless of those around,
Seeing only her emerald eyes
Yet she no longer saw,
One who had saved her throne
And looking to her glamoured Knights
Who polished armour, weapons, and tools
She followed the stirring of her heart
And turned her back on the Clown Prince of Fools.
