Incubus
         by Christine Emmert

I am that letter washed up from the sea,
clutched in the hands of the dead sailor.
I am the voice that called to him
in the storm,
rode him down into the blackness of the water.
He looked upon me first with eyes of horror
but when our lips touched
I drew his life, his love into my being.
Then he held me
with more longing than his first love.
Then his tongue attached itself to mine
in a curl of desire.

I wait until the thunder summons me.
I wait until the light fails.
Then I rise up, a thousand waves strong.

Then I say my name in the furius voice of wine.
I am Incubus.
I will find you even on the sunny days
and watch until the storm rises
in your heart.
Then the sea brings me your passion
and I swallow it whole.
