It seemed an eternity that Rosei ran, clenching the Eye in her right hand.
Black seemed to engulf the world and Rosei's mind became overwhelmed in the
sheer vacuity of the cave. As she ran, she thought about her parents ? they
were probably worried sick by now. Rosei's thoughts came to Mare. Where is
she? Rosei wondered. Rosei thought back to all of her adventures: staying
at The Blacklock Inn, running through the forest.
As these thoughts coursed through Rosei's mind, a gradual determination
swept over her. So much effort has gone into returning the Eye, she
thought, and I will not stop when I am so close.
With that, she pushed her aching feet from her mind and let the seed of
courage grow and strengthen. In seeming synchronicity with this change of mind,
a small beam of light suddenly appeared far in the distance. As Rosei's feet
carried her further and further on, the light slowly grew, until it finally
enveloped all of Rosei's view. Miraculously, the brilliant light failed to
blind Rosei or make her squint; there was a deep, almost palpable magic in the
atmosphere.
This magic flowed into Rosei's heart, ridding her of any vestiges of hurt
left over from the shadow creatures. The magic revealed to Rosei a great stone
statue standing against the wall of the cave. This grandiose monolith was in
the shape of a phoenix, whose proud head towered to the roof of the cave and
whose outspread wings seemed to push against the walls.
As Rosei halted before the phoenix's enormous talons, she felt as if
something were missing in this statue. The Eye! her thoughts boomed. She
opened her right hand and raised the sapphire high above her head. At once a
brilliant beam of blue light shot out from the Eye. As Rosei followed the beam,
she saw that it pointed to one of the phoenix's eye sockets. Rosei saw that
only one of these niches was filled; a dully-shining jewel identical to the Eye
rested therein. The other socket was empty.
A sudden wind swept up the Eye, carrying it to its socket. As the Eye fell
into place, a sound like a thousand trumpets issued from everywhere at once.
The magic wind swooped over Rosei, raising her into the air. She watched in
rhapsody as the stone phoenix broke away to reveal the most beautiful bird that
Rosei had ever seen. Pheona's two great sapphire orbs turned to Rosei, and she
had a smile that sent a feeling beyond anything that could be described in
words, a feeling of pure Good into Rosei's heart. The phoenix opened its mouth,
the words that flowed smooth beyond comparison.
"Rosei," the phoenix said in a voice of androgyny. "You have performed a
deed of which the people of this earth will speak and praise for all time. Your
destiny commands that you do great things, and your heart has guided you to
return Good to the world of mortals. For your laudable heroism and valiance
above all others, I send you praise from all of the gods on high. Moreover, I
send you and all those on this earth peace that shall reign until the End of
All."
Rosei was returned to the farm to see her parents in each other's loving
embrace, a sight that brought a smile of utmost joy to her face. As she looked
over the flourishing crops that stretched as far as the eye could see, she
spotted Mare galloping toward her mistress.
With her heart finally at peace, Rosei turned to the sky. She watched as the
Great Bird ? Pheona ? led a procession of hundreds of phoenixes across the sky.
As Rosei watched the graceful birds soar through the firmament, she spotted a
single bird in the rear. Phoenix looked down upon Rosei and smiled, and Rosei
knew that this was the greatest day of her life - the day that the Lost Eye of
Pheona was returned to Baldarr Cave and peace enshrouded the world.
