The Bartenders Secret by Chris Fry
Oh my, I used to love that job. My name is Bard, and for most of my life I
was a bartender. Sure, some parts of the job weren't very fun but, the job
certainly did pay well, and there were always pretty women there, but there is
something I loved even more about the job.
You see, the bar that used to be Hetterfield's Inn, before it burnt down,
was in the middle of the Wild Forest. For those of you who don't know, the Wild
Forest is in the middle of everything an adventurer could want.
To the north you have Ice Mountain. Some say there are long lost treasures
at the top. I can't say as I have ever heard of anyone making it to it's peak
though.
To the far south and west, there are marshes for hundreds of miles. The
Marsh Dragons live there you know. Many adventurers go there in attempts to
kill one of those dragons. They claim that to own the head of a Marsh Dragon is
to have immortality. I can't say that anyone has ever accomplished that one
either.
Then to the east there are several things. The Elf kingdom is there. The
Elves are kind folks, but the giants who live in the hills near them, are not.
With all that around, you can guess that I used to get some pretty wild
adventurers in there at the bar. They were mostly Humans and Gnomes. Gnomes are
well known for their adventurous spirit. They would come in with fascinating
stories. Stories that you cant even imagine! Yes, it was the stories that I
loved so much about that job.
A few Gnomes came in one night and told me how they had just rescued their
friend from an Elf dungeon. They claim he was falsely accused of a crime by the
Elf King. They told about how they had to battle dozens of guards and, just for
spite, they also stole some of the Elves treasure.
After a while, the Gnomes were pretty drunk. One fell off his chair and a
gold object fell out of his pocket. I knew what it was right away. It was a
Summoner Bracelet. It is said that if you use a Summoner Bracelet, the nearest
beast will be summoned and come destroy an enemy for you. They must have stolen
it from the Elves. I picked it up and put it in my pocket. They were so drunk
they never even noticed I took it.
I have had that bracelet for several years now. Really, I have a lot of
power with it. I could even summon a Marsh Dragon if I wanted to. I actually
did use it once but, that tale is for another time. The Elves would have my
head if they ever found out I had it. No one can know I have it. Let's just let
this be our little secret.
