Voice of the Future (17 ratings)
         by Aik Haw

On this sunless world I walk unseen,
On this barren land I wonder what had been,
On this lifeless Earth I bear my forebear's sin,
On this wretched ground I cannot come clean.

Where are the endless fields of emerald grass?
Where are the birds flying in the air so fast?
Where are the willows that bend in the gust?
Are these but myth of a time long past?

Let me tell you about this world I see,
A world of dried rivers and acrid seas,
A plain of crumbling dust not knowing trees,
Ancient ruins, monuments to what will never be.

Now walk with me down this ancient road,
Lurking with land mines down every moat,
Where wild expanse in glowing radiation coat,
And where the clouds bring acid on a land it loath.

Listen to the wind your people sow,
Do you hear the sound of birds that crow?
Is that the whisper of children who sing and grow?
If that is, let me know.

Touch the ground of the ancient Earth,
Can this arid soil be a source of mirth?
Are your crumbling buildings providence for berth?
To whom this rusty wreck will ever serve?

Savor the stench of dying things,
Smell the waft of sterile beings,
Adore the scent of the sea of sand,
Understand the reek of a failing land.

I do not understand you my ancestors,
And your actions that left this world to fester,
A glorious planet was yours to master,
But you self-destruct and with it life whither.

I am the voice of a lonesome future,
Begging you my ancestors instead to nurture,
This world so vast yet so tender,
So that after you leave many may yet share in Her Wonder.
