Power Play by Robert Cameron Hazelton
A Wizard's Whim/A Wyvern's Woe
Save your strength dreaded wyrm
within my crystal orb you squirm,
my magiks bind you to this plane
so that your power I may drain
to perpetrate my evil scheme
the scope of which I'm sure must seem
insane to those who fail to see
true greatness in my destiny.
These incantations I recite
require much more mystic might
than I alone can generate
hence this hapless dragon's fate.
Watching me through snake-like eyes
this horrid beast must fantasize
of shattering its gleaming cell
and sending me straight to hell.
Such arcane rites do take their toll,
I hope I can maintain control.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Draconic Deception
Foolish mortal, predictably vain
poise bolstered by my timidity,
your body weakens from the strain
a hapless pawn of my duplicity.
For centuries I carefully sought
an ignorant dupe with modest gift
but my hopes were always for naught
until this novice bridged the rift.
Certain of some grand providence
weak mind ripe for manipulation
I breached his sadly meager defense
while feigning abject resignation.
With ancient guile I shrewdly implant,
barely able to mask my glee,
the eldritch words that comprise his chant
which, when complete, will set me free.
The mage sputters, mind embroiled
sanity leaving ounce by ounce-
I lie here awake, muscles coiled
awaiting my chance to roughly pounce.
