Cat House by Wendy Holler
Page 2 of 4 After what we found out back, can you imagine what we might find inside?"
"Animals die, big deal. I want to go inside," Renee argued.
"I'll wait right here for you," Suze informed her, not budging.
Without further argument Renee went up on the front porch and opened the
door. Before entering Renee turned around to look at Suze and stuck out her
tongue in her typical goofy manner. Still looking at Suze she stepped inside
the doorway and went down. She disappeared completely, and then there was a
loud thud.
"Renee!" Suze cried out as she ran toward the door.
As Suze got closer to the door she couldn't help but notice there was no
floor inside. She got to the door and peered down only to see her friend lying
in a heap in the basement full or garbage.
"Renee! Are you awake? Say something damn it!"
Nothing. No response. Quickly Suze dug her cell phone out of her bag and
dialed 911. The dispatcher informed her that they were sending someone right
away, but it might take awhile since Suze and Renee were out in the middle of
nowhere. Suze hung up with the dispatcher and began her long wait.
"Renee! Wake up! Help is on the way," Suze reassured her bending over the
ledge of the doorway.
Renee still didn't answer her. It was so dark in the basement that Suze
couldn't even tell if she was breathing or not. Suze looked up from where she
was sitting and could see that the second floor was still in place. Hopefully
it would stay in place until they got the hell out of there.
Suze sat where she was for what seemed to be hours, but she really knew it
was only minutes. Outside the sky was starting to get dark and there were
strange noises coming from the second floor. To Suze they sounded like slamming
doors. A soft breeze began to blow around the porch, whipping at the grass,
debris on the porch, and Suze's hair. The doors upstairs began to slam harder;
Suze just assumed it was the wind.
"Renee. Please wake up," she said as she hugged herself, trying to keep from
getting chilly.
The wind began to whip harder around her and clouds seemed to be moving in
making it even darker. Suze was surprised when she looked to her right only to
see a big black cat sitting next to her. As if happy to have been noticed he
began to purr loudly and rubbed his head against her arm.
"Meow," said the black cat and continued to rub his head on her arm until
Suze scratched him behind his ears.
Suze stopped and looked down to see if Renee was awake yet. She hadn't even
moved from where she had fallen.
"Renee..."
"Meow," said the cat it's purring had stopped, for it was no longer getting
Suze's attention.
"Get out. Meow," came a voice.
Startled, Suze looked at the cat and it was almost like it was smiling at
her.
"You didn't say that," Suze told the cat just as much as she was reassuring
herself and pushed the black cat away.
All of the sudden things started to slam around upstairs and garbage began
to fly around in the basement. As much as Suze wanted to move she couldn't, she
was fixed right at the spot, kneeling over the doorjamb. The cat put his front
paws on her shoulder and got right in her face.
"Meow, get out," it hissed and then hit her in the face with it's paw using
all of it's claws.
Suze could feel the blood welling up in the fresh cuts on her cheek. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Wendy Holler, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
