The Lake by Wendy Holler
The lake rested way up in the mountains. What made it a perfect spot was the
fact it was out in the middle of nowhere and there was never anybody around. On
top of those two pluses was one minus. The road that took you to the lake was a
complete nightmare. It hade never been paved, it was riveted with cavernous
holes. Sometimes a stream would actually be flowing down the road after a
rainstorm. Huge rocks jutted out from nowhere, making a driver fearful for the
oil pan on their vehicle.
Sara and Anne sat silently in the back of the jeep, hoping their trek up the
side of the mountain to the lake didn’t leave them with any major damage.
Jarryed skillfully maneuvered the jeep around the rocks and holes. Dennis sat
in the front passenger seat quietly nursing his beer.
Along the side of the "road" were trees for miles. It was a beautiful
midsummer day. Perfect for a good swim, and the girls were getting anxious to
get there. They didn’t want to rush Jarryd though, for fear of messing anything
up on the jeep. It was his baby.
"Are we almost there yet?" questioned Sara, clearly getting tired of being
cramped in the back.
"Soon," answered Dennis as he finished his beer and threw it out the
window.
"Litterbug," Anne teased.
The ride was getting bumpier and starting to bounce everyone around in their
seats.
"Good thing I’m not drinking from the bottle. I’d chip a tooth," Anne said
to Sara, raising her eyebrows, indicating that she was ready for a drink.
"I know I’m ready for a cold one. Are we there yet?" she asked yet again,
purposely trying to get on the guys nerves. It was her hobby.
This time the guys ignored her and started on their own conversation.
Something about four wheeling. It was a never-ending conversation with those
two. Anne looked at Sara and rolled her eyes. She was so ready for the ride to
be over. She was beginning to think that it would never end and then the jeep
crested the hill.
Before them was the beautiful, pristine lake. What really surprised them was
that someone was there besides just them. Not something Sara and Anne had
planned on.
"What the hell?" Anne quipped.
"It’s not like we own the lake and can keep other people from coming up
here," Dennis said as he got out of the jeep.
"Too bad. I hate being around other people," Jarryd replied joining Dennis
outside the jeep.
The girls quickly got out as well and started over towards the lake, ready
for a swim.
"Hello there girls," came an unfamiliar voice.
Anne and Sara both turned around only to be greeted by what appeared to be
the oldest man alive.
"Hello there," Anne replied, kind of feeling bad for the old timer. Why
would he be all the way out here in this heat by himself?
"What brings you out here?" Sara asked, clearly on the same wavelength as
Anne.
"Oh, just checking to make sure there aren’t anymore leftovers from the
victims. You kids be careful. There are some strange things here. I should
probably come back tomorrow to make sure you kids aren’t its next victims. Take
care."
Before anyone could ask him what the hell he was talking about he hopped in
his vehicle and started off down the "road". Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Wendy Holler, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
