News release for HOTMAN'S INNOCENCE by Peter S. Hotman
New author, Peter S. Hotman presents his first book, HOTMAN'S INNOCENCE, a
family saga/memoir. The message is NEVER BE SILENT about abuse. Tell
immediately, and tell the truth. The shame ALWAYS belongs to the perpetrator!
Silence of victims empowers the abusers to violate the innocent again, or find
new prey. This book is based on actual event, spanning one hundred years,
through three family generations. The author takes the reader on an emotional
roller-coaster ride as the drama unfolds in the lives of the characters. For a
moment the reader wants to rescue certain individuals, and then the next moment
one wants to strangle the same. Angels and devils, saints and sinners a
combination of personality traits, good and evil are in these poor,
good-hearted but flawed Ozarks' characters. A little goodness mixed with
wickedness in these people making for realistic human beings. The beginning is
loaded with details about a land and people of extremes. The impoverished,
backward Ozarks culture during the 1950's and 60's has the reader stepping into
a third world country smack in the middle of heartland USA.
Here's a survivors' story based on actual events in the lives of three
family generations, spanning one hundred years. This gut wrenching family saga,
and explosive memoir addresses many universal and American social issues
present during the past century. HOTMAN'S INNOCENCE is told in part through the
eyes of a child. Laced with natural sarcasms, humor, and realistic dialogue.
Composition of this book makes for a pleasurable adventure in reading.
The author has taken a few artistic liberties and plays with view point but
the broken literary rule works for this story. LITTLE HOUSE and Mark Twain
meets Louise Erdrich is how HOTMAN'S INNOCENCE has best been described. Divided
into two sections, Section One begins with the author's ancestors' legacy and
how their lives will eventually touch his.. The story of his grandparents
homesteading during the early 1900's, and raising nine children. The author
focuses on the oldest daughter Delena and the youngest sibling Enoch born
twenty years later. Delena survives rape. Enoch suffers brain damage. He
marries thirteen-year-old Ora during the 1950's. Enoch and Ora have children.
Their first born is the author, Peter Saul and then his sister Jane. Section
two begins at Peter Saul's birth, "Saul's Memoir." Ora has an affair with
Enoch's best friend Merl Judas. The family is destroyed. Saul and Jane struggle
to survive while enduring mental, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the
hands of their mother's lover Merl Judas. Eventually they are abandoned and are
passed from one home to another, thirteen in all. This book was final closure
for the author's traumatized childhood. A message of hope that one can overcome
cycles of abuse and take back his own life. A survivor's story of hope based on
actual events.
Today Peter S. Hotman lives in Arkansas. He teaches independent living
skills to the disabled. He and his wife have helped to raise thirty-eight
foster children.
