Hitchhiking Is Dangerous (38 ratings) by Michael J. Irwin
Page 2 of 2 "Great weather lately, needed it where I’ve been..."
Yea, I bet you have. What exactly did that mean, great weather for what?
Where have you been? Tom instantly decided he needed to calm down and he
began to watch the passing scenery as they drove.
"So did you just break down? Looked like a pretty new car..."
New car? Hope he doesn’t think I’ve got money, Tom thought. God, what was
he doing, he knew hitchhiking was just as dangerous as picking up
hitchhikers, but he didn’t listen to his mother and God only knew what might
happen. Are we going the right way? The though choked Tom, he suddenly
couldn’t remember what way it was back to town.
"...Wife sure be sad she missed this trip..."
Murder! Killed his wife he did! Whoa, that’s to much of an assumption.
Tom’s shook his head, tiring of thinking. Suddenly his eye caught the butt
of a small wooden handle wedged down behind the seat. An ax? Too big, must
be a hatchet, easier for hacking. God, he was going to die, this guy was
crazy and he was going to die.
"Hmmm, running low on gas. We’ll make it, no worry."
Make it where, to wherever it is you’re gonna drag me out and hack me to
pieces with your hatchet friend? "Yea, it’s ok." Ha! Tom didn’t think so,
he wasn’t going to be taken by this maniac, not on his life! Too weak to
take such a large man, too weak. What could he do, really? His eyes caught
the wooden handle. Move quick, move fast.
"God, I hate how the wheel jerks, makes me feel like I’m gonna break down
any second."
"Oh?" Some excuse! No need to make excuses to you’re victims you psycho!
Move fast, make it quick, one good one and you’ll be safe. His eyes
suddenly shot forward, hoping his staring hadn’t been spotted.
"...Some of the finest gear..."
Finest gear for killing! Bastard! In an instant Tom moved, grabbing the
hatchet and bringing it in a swift stroke down on the man’s head. Streaks
of blood fell across his face and the windshield as he grabbed the wheel and
pulled the car to the side of the road, reaching down and shutting off the
engine. The man stirred, making a sob. With another swing Tom brought the
hatchet down and planted in into his chest. He wasn’t moving. Safe. No
more worries.
Tom looked around at all the blood and sighed. Self-defense didn’t mean
there wasn’t any remorse, but it was either kill or be killed, no way out.
A phrase crossed his mind, a familiar phrase that for some reason didn’t sit
right anymore for Tom. He spoke the phrase out loud as he dragged the
psycho’s body from the car into the woods. Hitchhiking is just as
dangerous as picking up hitchhikers."
- Hitchhiking Is Dangerous is a _very_ short story that's based on a concept
I had while driving through Pennsylvania. It was based on the what if's
that always enter our mind when we're put into weird situations. I've found
myself questioning someone's integrality a few times, but always mentally
and I'm always wrong. It's written in a format that I wouldn't say I've
discovered cause I'm sure other people use it. Basically the format is not
to be taken as a great literary piece of work but more of a spookish look
into someone's mind through the cross of first and third person perspectives
and the lack of any plot-supporting dialogue. Most people find this a
stupid way of writing but I thought for Hitchhiking Is Dangerous it would be
perfect and the type of people who will like this will probably be the type
of people who enjoy student films that have very confusing plots and scenes.
