It was like the ward was never gone.

Satisfied he ran back down to his room taking great pains not to be seen by any of the household staff. He got into his room and locked it behind him. He sat down and looked at what he had pilfered.

He hadn’t realised what he had done. The fact that he had stolen off his master never bothered him. Now he was greedy over what he had got. He instantly became a power hungry young man.

His eyes picked out a spell of quick learning. He read the scroll silently in his head making sure he knew what the spell does. The spell would enable him to instantly learn the spell of a scroll or even learn the entire contents of a spell book. But the scroll warned that using its power to absorb the contents of a spell book could result in the practitioner losing his mind. Ted never took in that fact.

He greedily had an idea. ‘What if I place all three of my spell books on top of each other? Would I learn the contents of all three?’ he decided to try it any way.’

He placed all three spell books on top of each other.

He quickly recited the words and aimed it magic on the books. Instantaneously he screamed out in pain. The knowledge of all three books just appeared in his mind and he wasn’t prepared for the pain that followed.

His own instincts took over and directed a burst of raw energy over his mind. The pain vanished and left him with the knowledge. He now knew how to levitate objects. Toss fireballs around, scry people out and much, much more. He quickly levitated his candlestick then tossed a small fireball over the top to light it in mid air.

All of a sudden he lost control over himself. Te fireball arched and flew straight into the wall hangings setting them alight. The lighted candle dropped from mid air spilling all over the scrolls on the floor. They caught light and exploded the magical energies. The blast was so great it ripped open a hole in the fabric of this reality into the demon reality. Ted was knocked out of his window by the force of the blast. It was fortunate that his room was on the ground floor. Dazed he got to his feet to see his room an inferno.

Then his heart skipped a beat. From within his room he could see into the demon realm and what he saw was worst then the worst nightmares imaginable. A grotesque demon stood with its jaws gaping wide and low showing off rows of sharp teeth to good effect.

"Why thank you puny mortal." It said in a far off sounding voice.

"Now die!" It spat with contempt while it through a ball of pure energy at Ted.

Ted barely dived out of the way in time. He quickly readied himself. Then in a magically enhanced voice shouted.

"Guards! Guards! Come quick we are under attack."

Two guards who were on patrol came running swords drawn.

They arrived as the demon was stepping out of Ted’s destroyed window. Upon seeing the demon they cried their war cries and charged the beast. One of them quickly shouted back to Ted.

"Quick boy run fetch your master!" Then turned and engaged the demon.

Ted ran as hard as he could calling out his master’s name in his magically enhanced voice. As he was running he mind swam, his thoughts were all over the place.

His master came running quickly, he ran past Ted and on towards the sound of fighting. Ted followed his master.
