It was a cold dark night and Alex and his friends were walking back to his flat in London. When Alex got nearer to the door, he noticed something strange. A tall figure, whose face was in shadow, was approaching them, menacingly, from the door. Mark, one of Alex’s best friends, was nervous. The dark hooded figure brushed into Alex’s shoulder and walked down the steps.

"Hey! Who do you think you are!?" shouted Alex whilst turning around to look at the ruffian.

The man said nothing and carried walking down the street and climbed into his white van.

"Idiot…" said Kurt who was also one of Alex’s friends.

As they were walking up the old wooden stairs, to Alex’s apartment, something caught Kurt’s attention. It was a glistening silver watch lying on the floor of the corridor.

"Alex, isn’t that your grandfather’s watch?" he asked. Alex walked over to it curiously. He picked it up.

"Yes, it is! What’s it doing here? It should be in my…"

He rushed around the corner towards his flat. As he opened the door he was shocked to find his whole flat had been totally ransacked.

"That Dude!" shouted Kurt.

They raced downstairs and onto the street. There was a silence. The road was empty.

They all thought that the individual coming out of the block was responsible for the raid on Alex’s flat

When they went back upstairs Mark and Kurt helped Alex tidy up the mess. After a few minutes, Mark found a fresh piece of paper that looked suspicious and read what it said.

"Oh-oh!"

He handed it to Alex. It read:

"I AM GOING TO KILL YOU"

"What should we do?" asked Mark, perplexed.

"We should tell the police!" said Alex, bitterly.

Kurt disagreed.

"We should keep quiet, otherwise whoever did this could get angry at us, innit?"

Alex was dazed.

"Yeah, you’re right."

When they had finished tidying up, it was midnight. They were still trying to figure out who was behind the threat.

Alex was restless.

"We can’t just sit here," he said anxiously, "I think we should try to find out who it was."

"Maybe it was Nick," said Mark "We used to bully him all the time. He said he was going to get us back one day…"

Alex was thinking.

"Yes, it could have been."

"What about Marcelus? Remember, it was our fault his brother died, we were the ones who provided him with heroine!"

"No, I don’t think he would do that, we’ve known him for years and he’s always been sensible."

"Mmmmmmmm."

At that moment there was a knocking at the door. They looked at each other. They were bewildered. The knocking became a thunderous pounding. The door burst open, unexpectedly and, from nowhere, a spray of bullets soared across the corridor and into the room. The three of them scrambled across the floor, and into the other part of the room. They were safe, for now.

"What’s going on!?" cried Kurt.

"I don’t know, man! I’m getting my gun!" replied Alex, in a trembling voice.

He reached into his chest of drawers and pulled out a shiny H&K P7M8, which had been given to him by one of his friends. He cautiously peered around the corner of the wall and took three ear-splitting shots. They heard the intruder shriek in pain, and then scamper down the stairs.
