Janus by Calum Lithgow
Page 2 of 7 He could feel the currents swirling around him and knew that he was too
late, he would just have endure, survive and make for the surface when it
finished. Wearily he turned around and dived for the entrance to the Ritz,
where he would at least have protection from the razor sharp shards of
Judgement.
But just before he reached the doorway the world was tipped on
its side and he subsequently tumbled back along the street. The world righted
itself a second later and on cue Judgement started. There was a rush of water
sending him spiralling upwards before the currents reversed and slammed him
into the plastic road. The world was shaken several more times before he
smacked his head off the corner of the Houses of Parliament. The world went
black as he sank to the ground unconscious.
When he awoke the world was still. The announcement of Judgement
was over and the verdict was ready to be delivered. The city was surrounded by
a whirlpool of countless squares of shiny plastic, each ten times bigger then a
man and deadly sharp. The shards of heaven, the tools of Judgement, the reason
why Janus longed to be inside.
One shard broke away from the stream and shot towards him. Janus
had no conception of what he had done to be judged evil in the eyes of God but
now he was going to pay the price for his actions. The shard of heaven came
spinning savagely towards him, the flat surface stretching out into horizontal
infinity as it covered his entire field of vision; each corner blending in with
the other to give the semblance of a giant disk. Like an arrow plunging forward
to strike death in his heart.
Janus ducked and surprisingly the shard did not follow as he
rolled out of the way. Instead it continued on towards the young woman standing
naked behind him, her stance erect and proud as she faced her death without
fear. The shard twisted around into vertical precision at the last moment and
instead of slicing across her chest it cleaved through flesh in perfect
symmetry, severing her body into half. Each division of her body dying too fast
to be helped but slowly enough for the full extent of pain to be felt. One eye
to observe the fate of those who dare to defy the wishes of the Eye; one ear to
hear the scream of destiny torn from lonely lips yearning to be whole again;
one arm to flail in despair as a desperate signal for retribution and
forgiveness; one leg to endeavour in a futile attempt to escape Judgement.
The shard wobbled slowly back to the group as they gradually
descended back to the greater deep below the city by the plug. There had been
many other casualties and fatalities of the storm and many people were now
cautiously leaving their houses to help. Janus, however, took one last look at
the woman's body as blood flooded the water and darted back into the Ritz. He
grabbed one of the larger chunks of algae and departed for the Island;
desperate to get away from the scene of blood and death and return to his
expecting family while the foam was still high.
On the way home the world was shaken three times more. Four
Judgements in one day! Never had it happened before. Janus grew more and more
worried as he swam, battling against the thrashing water but thankfully not the
divine shards below in the city. It had to be the final judgement day, where
the world was destroyed and those worthy given a new and better world to live
in. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Calum Lithgow, sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author. The author has submitted the work in accordance with and in agreement with the following Submission Guidelines.
