How did Tolkien actually portray the Rohirrim? October 22, 1999

Following an avalanche of email over the previous essay, I wrote this article to answer many questions and counterpoints raised by readers. The Rohirrim are probably the chief reason for why people think Middle-earth is some sort of medieval fantasy setting. Covers a lot of history, both real and imaginary.

So you want to learn Elvish? October 29, 1999

This essay surveys some of the best online resources for helping people learn Elvish. It also looks at print resources (books by the Tolkiens and other people).

The Merchants of Middle-earth November 5, 1999

This essay explores commerce in Middle-earth and how the various civilizations would have relied upon trade. Money, changes in economic resources, and the implications of many of the small businesses mentioned in the books are considered.

Who were the real heroes of Middle-earth? November 12, 1999

A comparison between Tolkien and the people he knew and the central characters of his great Middle-earth stories.

Them Dwarves, Them Dwarves! November 19, 1999 Them Dwarves, Them Dwarves, Part II November 26, 1999

When someone complained in a Tolkien forum about a dearth of information on the Dwarves and their culture I set myself the task of putting together these two essays. Aspects of Dwarven history, culture, values, and how other peoples viewed them are considered.

Strange as news from Bree December 3, 1999

How Bree may have thrived in the late Second and early Third Age, and how it must have survived in the late Third Age. Bree fortunes rose and fell with the fortunes of the rest of Eriador.

Hobbit Tales, or Never There And Back Again... December 10, 1999

This article takes a look at some of the background stories Tolkien devised for his Hobbits. Hobbit history is examined to provide a context for some of the minor events noted in genealogical tables or passed on as by-the-way mentions in the texts.

Ranger For Hire: Have Horse, Will Travel December 17, 1999

Another popular essay, this article which examines the question of where Aragorn's people lived, how they survived, and what the Rangers were expected to do (or capable of doing). Covers a lot of Arnor's later history as well.

Have a Happy Hobbit Holiday December 24, 1999

This essay looks at Hobbit holidays and compares them with traditional winter solstice holidays like Christmas.

Exploring Tolkien's Fourth Age January 7, 2000

This essay was inspired by another fan question concerning what actually happened in the Fourth Age. It is possible to construct a partial history for the earlier part of the age, although there are (as always) some anomalies.

Beorning Questions... January 14, 2000

Inspired by a fan inquiry on a message board, this essay looks at who the Beornings were, where they may have originated, and how they may have lived. A lot of the history of Tolkien's Northmen is covered.

Love, Middle-earth Style January 21, 2000

A survey of the marriages of many of Tolkien's most important characters.

Just Whose Middle-earth Is It, Anyway? January 28, 2000

This essay looks at how Tolkien's Middle-earth has been expanded through the work of critics, linguists, and commercial interests. Tolkien himself started the ball rolling by selling the film and merchandising rights to his books to United Artists, and things have snowballed from there.

Do Balrogs Have Wings? Do Balrogs Fly?

This essay was written outside of Suite101, and this particular version includes material not published elsewhere. The extremely controversial nature of Balrogs is examined in depth.

Understanding Magic in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth

Written for the online gaming community, this essay attempts to lay the groundwork for future discussion of how Tolkien's magic actually works. Few aspects of Middle-earth are so poorly understood as the way Tolkien developed and used magic. This essay was written with input from dozens of fans who contributed ideas and references. One of the longest, if not the longest, essays on Tolkien's world I've ever written, it barely scratches the surface of the topic. An entire book could be devoted to Tolkien's magic.
