Mr (6 ratings) by Paul May
Page 2 of 8 "Right ahead Captain all corridors seem to spread outwards from our
destinations point, very much like a web", waving his arm in a wide expanse
"All roads lead to Rome" the Doctor whispered under his breath then cringed
as he remembered the suit boosted his voice as every ones heads turned to look
in his direction. Their helmeted heads cocked in a questioning angle.
"It‘s a famous quote okay?", he replied feebly to the strong looks.
"If you’d like to keep trivial observations and Geography to yourself
Doctor,
we can then begin if that’s okay with you?" The Doctors gave a replying shrug
"Right! Well! If no one else has any wise cracks let’s go" he pointed to a side
corridor at right angles to the Lieutenant’s route "that way circling the area,
making our way slowly inward, then-"
"But Sir! It’s obvious we should go the quickest way, this place is giving
me
the creeps! I mean every one knows the rumours about Neo-Technology and all I
want to do is complete our objective then get the hell out of this hellho-"
"Yes well that’s why I happen to be the Captain and you’re the Lieutenant. I
call every single shot. So were doing it my way, the cautious way". The
Lieutenant seemed to cringe under the onslaught.
"And another thing for all you new people" he swept his arm to indicate
everyone "rumours are just that rumours, so can we just leave the stories with
the nappies and bibs. Well if your finished Lieutenant let‘s get your dummy
into
gear and shove it!"
"Yes Sir. Sorry for my outburst"
Without another word they proceeded down the corridor the Lieutenant had
indicated, trying to grab as much cover as they could from the sparse corridor,
looking much like a bright white butterfly would trying hide against a
background of black.
They occasionally came across large blast doors (they were sealed far longer
than any human could ever hope to remember). Their pockmarked, rusted faces
showed their will to resist even through the extremes of their designs. When
this occurred, simple action was taken to remedy it. The Doctor fixed one of
his
under slung discuses to the wall with a click as it magnetically stuck to the
metal. Then he pressed several keys on its tiny keypad and the discuss came to
life, its long lasting nuclear life source powering the ancient door systems
deprived power systems and making them grudgingly flicker to life. The door
would then roll back a protective blast shield that protected its controls. The
Captain would read some information he had been given before they arrived (it
was projected onto his retina), then he would type in a code on the keypad (it
was different each time). The door controls would blink and flash, before it
accepted the code it was given, then it would separate into several parts and
roll away into the recess in the wall (its ancient pistons and servos
screeching
with lifetimes of rust against rust). This meant the group could then continue
with their journey.
Chapter 2
This same process continued for some time as they made their way in a wide
circle around the epicentre of the base. Down the corridors, trailing past many
doors, sealing their ancient secrets behind them. Some had rusted, corroded or
had weapons fire streaked across so much of their surface that it meant that
their identifying marks couldn’t be distinguished or in some cases, barely see
where the wall stopped and the door began. On other doors, various symbols
could
be discerned. The double helix of a medical area, the biological hazard symbols
for bio-chemical research and development facilities, the nuclear atom symbol
for any engineering and technical facilities and so it went on. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Paul May, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
