Island Life (Book Synopsis) by William Meikle Buy from Amazon.comPage 2 of 3 Meanwhile, Duncan is making his way back to his house. After changing clothes
he heads for the pub, only to find it empty. He discovers the body of Anne's
husband, and finds that the radio for communicating with the mainland has been
smashed. By now desperate for human company, he heads northwards. He enters a
farm cottage searching for its occupant, but they too have vanished.
A thick fog begins to descend, a fog in which heavy shapes are seen to move.
Duncan retreats, heading for the shore, and is chased by something that he
never quite sees, only hears. He makes it to the bay and commandeers a small
yacht, but, before he can get more than ten yards from shore, that too is
capsized. Duncan swims to the shore to find that he is still being pursued. He
heads for a cave that he knows about, a cave which leads back through the
island to the cellar of the pub. He is chased all the way by his unseen
stalker.
Duncan makes it to the cellar door, only to find it closed. His stalker
catches him, and Duncan sees it for the first time - a seven foot nightmare
with wide eyes, clammy skin and long talons. Just as the creature reaches for
him, he is saved as Margaret opens the cellar door and shoots the creature.
Anne wakes up in the creatures' cavern, and finds that the leader of the
tribe, an ancient male, has chosen her as his mate because she is pregnant and
will be able to bear children who will bring new life to the tribe. She learns
more about the creature's history and their habits but she is unable to find
any means of escape.
Back in the lighthouse, Tom tells Dick a story of a long forgotten tribe of
sorcerors who were banished to the cave under the island by St Columba. The
tribe has mutated over the years to adapt to their dark existence, and
occasionally have managed to break out and wreak havoc. Tom's story telling is
interrupted by the arrival of a boat carrying the local doctor who, having
examined the student, has come to the island to see if anyone else needs
help.
The doctor, despite Tom's protestations, convinces Dick to take him to the
mound to search for any survivors. Dick and the doctor set off in a jeep, but
they don't get as far as the mound. The creatures have come out from their cave
and surround the mound. Leaving the jeep a safe distance away Dick and the
doctor watch as they enact a magical rite, seemingly calling down power from
the stars, a power strong enough to re-animate for a while the dead bodies of
some of the students.
Dick and the doctor watch the rite then slip away, stunned by what they have
just seen. On the way back to the lighthouse they become aware that they are
being followed. The doctor panics and starts to run but is brought down by
something which leaps from the bushes. Dick is about to shoot it when he
realises that it is the local farmer's sheepdog. All three return to the
lighthouse to find that Tom has smashed the radio to stop anyone else being
brought to the island. They lock themselves in and try to get some rest during
the long night.
Margaret and Duncan spend the night in the cellar of the pub. Duncan has to
tell Margaret that her father is dead and her mother is missing. Margaret tells
the story of how she came to be locked in the cellar. They spend the night
comforting each other and drinking from the supplies all around them.
In the morning they emerge and prepare to head for the north lighthouse -
the only place which might have a still functioning radio. But even before they
set off they have a row and Margaret runs off on her own in a blazing fit of
temper. Duncan follows, but is too slow to catch her. Next Page Copyright© 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 William Meikle, sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author.
