Island Life (Book Synopsis) by William Meikle Buy from Amazon.comPage 3 of 3 Halfway up the length of the island Duncan comes across the creatures working
to dig something from the ground. As he watches, they dig up what seems to be a
meteorite, a meteorite which glows with its own inner light and seems to convey
power to the creatures. Duncan tries to avoid the creatures, but is spotted,
and he has to fight two of them. After several close calls he manages to kill
them both, but he is now physically and mentally exhausted as he continues
northward.
Tom, Dick and the doctor open the lighthouse in the morning when they hear
the sound of a boat. The sole occupant is a Church of Scotland minister, called
by Tom before he broke the radio. The minister is from the old "fire and
brimstone" school and is determined to emulate St Columba and put the creatures
back into the ground. The doctor refuses to have any part in it and leaves on
the boat, taking the sheepdog with him.
Tom and the Minister set off for the mound, and Dick goes along
begrudgingly, determined to do all he can to keep Tom out of trouble.
They come across Margaret, locked in the jeep and surrounded by the
creatures. There is a short fight, but the creatures seem to have the upper
hand, until the sun appears from behind a cloud and they slink away, unable to
bear the power of its rays. The party is joined by an exhausted Duncan as they
get closer to the mound and, all together for the first time, they go down into
the cave system.
When they reach the cavern they find a ritual in progress - the creatures
are using the meteorite to bolster their strength and gain power. The old
Minister is appalled by the sacrilege and, helped by Tom, attacks the
leader.
The leader laughs at the Minister, kills him with barely using any of his
power, and fatally wounds Tom. Dick flies into a rage and attacks the
creature.
At the same time, Duncan and Margaret have found Anne, but she is being held
by the leader's magical spells and they cannot get her to move,
Dick manages to wound the leader by thrusting an emergency flare in its
face, a move which also breaks the spell on Anne. Anne and Margaret together
find that the power of a pregnant human female is what frightens the creatures,
and, using the power of the meteorite themselves, manage to cow and finally
destroy the creature's leader.
Old Tom dies in Dick's arms before the four survivors make their way out of
the cavern, using the power of the meteorite to hold the remaining creatures at
bay.
At the surface, Margaret and Anne summon all of the meteorite's power to
smash the mound down, closing off the hole and sealing the creatures in.
The four of them ,exhausted and battered, finally relax as a rescue
helicopter comes in over the island towards them. Buy from Amazon.com
