The Envious Mis-Matchmaker by Sara O'Brien
Page 2 of 4 "What's that magazine in your pants?", mom said.
"You don't need to know", I said.
"Give me what you've got"
She stole it, gazed at the picture, and threw it to me. Then, I couldn't
wait to read the two-page article. We returned home. I eagerly deviated the
pages so furiously that I skipped the page. I opened the page and read the
article.
"He's got a girlfriend too?", I said quietly but jealously.
I ,by nature, was so jealous because I didn't know in a day I would have
admired a celebrity. Obsession, the new thing to me, felt great but since the
article it was spoiled until the night came. I had a little premise about the
marvelous show which was since then three years old. He stumbled purposely in a
very cute way. He stood on his tall heavenly legs and launched on with the
show. I spotted the first obsessive thing in his face, his smile. I felt a
little soothing feeling flowing inside me. Was it called admiration? Probably,
I thought. His smile was so brightly beautiful. I suddenly laughed when he
mentioned some joke. Mom came over and watched him too. I felt a strong desire
to tell her about my Conan, the person I adore to death. I was hesitating.
Should I tell her? Is it a good idea?
Mom watched the show and looked satisfied with it. Dad who slept at eleven
that Friday night missed someone he would've perhaps liked. It came to mind
suddenly that I needed to say something.
"Mamma, do you know him?", I said.
"Of course, Conan O'Brien . He's so hilarious I think", mom said.
Where was I?, I thought with so much amusement. Then questions started
coming.
"Who is he? how old is he? is he married? does he have children? how tall is
he?....", I said aimlessly.
Mom,then, tranquilled me.
"I don't know!", she said.
I will know someday, I thought. I couldn't stay up for the rest of the show
but I will later when I get to know him. I slept with so many thoughts in my
head.
In the morning, I awoke and looked over beside me at the magazine I bought
that day. I gave the cover a kiss and went on. Dad declared he was going to get
a scanner that day. Coincidently, I thought of the magazine and my friend's
home and everything. Loving to change subjects, I blurted out,"Why don't we go
for a taping of the Conan show?".
Mom ,who seemed to be a fan, positively agreed but she knew that needed some
cash. I, myself, had no idea of the ticket's price. Dad would agree on what mom
said. Therefore, being kind and serious, mom agreed on Tuesday.
I was totally exhilirated by this but I couldn't wait. I went to my
friend's building; I might see him! So, there I was standing unusually for five
minutes and then deciding to knock the door. I looked at his apartment door for
a while. Why don't I visit him? I wanted to see him so badly that I playfully
knocked the door. I stood by my friend's apartment door. He was about to come
out when my friend invited me in. Freshly excited, I told her everything
alphabetically. Her mom and dad fortunately know Conan.
"You mean does he visit you?", I said. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Sara O'Brien, sffworld.com. All rights reserved.
