Sea Goddess (1 rating) by Alicia Raine

I saw her there one day. She rose up from the waves - she was made of them
and she set herself upon the back of Leviathan.
Of course, this sea monster had been sleeping for many years. Long ago, he
had set himself down to sleep in the time when the old gods gave way to man.
Tired, he had placed himself close to the banks of the shore where I stood, and
over many years had settled firmly into the sand, now covered with rocks and
dirt, and walked upon much by mortals.
Here she stood now, on these rocks of the dormant beast's back, and it was
as if her coming was known to all but us humans (for we had long ago forgotten
the language of the gods). Many birds had come to perch and sing upon trees
that had begun to gently caress the wind. A melody as sweet as death rose from
the sea, and then there came from her lips a song unheard of, unmatched, and
unbelievable. Were I to describe it, it would be an injustice, and never would
I dare desecrate her memory.
I became selfish. I held firmly the belief that she was singing for me!
Where once stood a shallow man, now I stood overwhelmed, but not afraid. This
was a sign. I would be a god! She had come, this sea goddess, to take me with
her to the depths of the ocean, and there, by her honey kiss I would live as a
god, own a voice such as hers that we would (upon occasion) grace mankind with
our song. So bright, so beautiful would our song together be that they would
flock to where we stood, and there they would fall upon their knees by the
sheer divinity of it.
This all came to me in a magickal moment of realization. It was an instant,
and I knew all of what I have just described was to be. I made a move to
go to her, stepping onto the great beast's back.
Alas! The earth shuddered violently beneath me, and I fell upon the scaly
rocks, a desperation washing through me so that I gripped these rocks and made
effort to crawl to my beloved.
I had not managed two feet before my heart could take me no farther.
For behold!-the creature Leviathan was waking! And here I came to know the
truth of it all. Her song was sweet for him, and the language of old returned
to me (perhaps from the fall) and I knew then, I knew her terrible song.
Wake! Wake god of the old seas!
You have slept long enough
Now comes the time
The Great One has commanded
For you to rise and take back the Earth
That we have mistrusted to false gods
Wake! Wake god of the old seas!
By your strength, thus shall the revolution begin
Our pact of old is through
Remember! Remember the early times, when man had his place
Us, being the fathers and mothers, delivered the Earth to them
And look! See how they have killed their parents!
See how they have betrayed us!
Wake! Wake god of the old seas!
That we may live again!
I covered my ears to this blasphemy, but could not free myself from it. Her
words swam within and about me, and her song was wretched. The birds cheered
her on and took to flight with voices that were one - that cried out for him to
wake, and trees on the distant shore swayed to the melody. I, I alone
screamed. Next Page Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 Alicia Raine, sffworld.com. All rights reserved. No part of this may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the author.
