Learning Fall (2 ratings) by Bruce Reasoner
Page 2 of 2 I began breathing again and realized the wind had been beaten out of me. I was
lucky. I landed on top of the gate because I was alone on one side with Chad
and Jar Boy on the other. Their combined weight pulled the gate down on top of
them, and me on top of it. Steve was on the end of the gate and jumped off when
it snapped, landing on his two goofy feet, avoiding any injury. Chad and Jar
Boy weren't so lucky.
I walked over to Chad and he wasn't moving. He was laid out like a man in a
casket, so at peace. I had to disturb him, to see if he was still alive, so I
kicked him. Yesss, I kicked him. He moaned and I knew he was going to make it.
I dragged the metal gate off of him, which felt like I was pulling a car with
flat tires. After I freed him I yelled at him to get his fat ass up.
Then I heard Jonny Angel. "Call 911, call 911. Somebody." He had wussed out
over a little blood. That's when I noticed Jar Boy. His blood was all over. It
covered him like 64ozs of spilled Red Mountain Dew. He was moving and I
realized we had to get out of there before the cops and ambulance showed up or
our collective Asses were grass.
"Lets go, we got to get the hell out of here before Angel gets back with the
cops."
We all got up and walked to our bikes like old men trying to reach the
bathroom before they crap their pants. Not very pretty, but we made it. Steve
and I barely had a scratch on us and we helped Chad and Jar Boy get to safety
like outlaws did in the old west when escaping from a bank robbery gone bad.
Riding home we were swerving like drunks, barely able to keep our balance on
the bikes. We looked like hell on the outside and hoped that we would not
forget what had happened.
