"Oh? She is a very willing worker. The deal was, Adalia, I leave your sister alone, she stays here and does everything I ask."

"Why my sister?" I know this is bait, but I cannot help taking it.

"Your sister," he spits, "is good. No use to someone like me. She wouldn’t even be good at white magic. So I agreed to spare her. You, on the other hand, are mine to command. Her life for yours. She is free to go now that you are here." He stops as my face pales. I can’t believe my mother would do this to me. He smiles cruelly. "Of course, she did take a little convincing. But she signed the agreement. She will leave tomorrow. You will be my bride."

He is several years older than me, but it seems to make no difference to him.

"Or you could be another servant to practice spells on." He knows that will make up my mind. I know he is cruel and uncaring about what happens to me. He just wants someone to control. And I will never be as powerful as he claims anyway. It seems like he can read my mind. "Oh, no, Adalia, you are very powerful. You just need training and you will be the second most powerful in the kingdom."

Maybe this isn’t such a bad thing. After all, like won’t be boring. And it would be fun to be powerful.

I make my decision. "When do we start?"

He smiles. "Right after the wedding."
