Ambush (5 ratings) by J.Suresh
Page 3 of 3 Finally the word that we feared was uttered by the C.O" Prepare to engage
the enemy...NO MERCY. For the glory of the Earth Forces,"
The space around, littered with thousands of ships began to exchange fire.
Various types of missiles flew over both sides, Gunnery Crew on each ship
feverishly destroy continuous stream of incoming missiles, making each shot
count as a miss would mean the loss of a ship and the loss of a irreplaceable
fighting force. The Saratoga received 2 hits, fortunately it didn't cause a
major damage. Our dedicated engineers immediately went to work and made the
ship running in no time. Time is of essence as to stall in a middle of a
dogfight is simply suicidal. Another missile managed to hit us...this time it
found it's mark and hit the control room. The C.O was thrown away from his seat
and landed face down on the floor 2 meters away from his seat. Other personnel
just recovered and scurried to the C.O. I too went there to check out the C.Os
condition. The C.O was lying down motionless.
I took over the helm of command as I'm the second highest-ranking officer
on the ship.
"Listen everyone, I'm taking over the command of the ship. The C.O is dead.
I repeat the C.O is dead. I want you all to listen to my instructions
carefully. Team Alpha head to the west and attack them by their left flank.
Team beta head to the east and attack them on their right flank. Backup forces,
provide covering fire to team Charlie (My ship and few other battle cruisers).
Team Charlie move forward and attack using all available weapons system.
Fighter crafts spread into small groups and tear away their defenses at their
northeastern flank. They are particularly vulnerable there as their engine
reactor is situated there. You'll get assistance from team Alpha and Bomber
squadrons. Bomber Squadron assist the fighter crafts," I ordered. My saliva was
dry after uttering a LONG string of command. I turned towards the Technology
Officer," Captain, you want to make use of yourself, then this is the time.
Hack into their weapons system,"
"Yes Sir, I will do my best," he replied and immediately got to work,
feverishly typing various lines of codes that seemed alien to me but common to
him. Heavy shelling of missiles continued on both sides as each force tries to
flush out each other using the element of 'massive firepower', of which we
lack. Time is running and if we want to emerge the victor, the T.O must hack
into their system. The battle now dragged into the 3rd hour. We have lost a
total of 300 ships, 400 fighter crafts and 600 military personnel. It's a huge
lost. All hope was lost when suddenly the T.O exclaimed
"EUREKA!, I've hacked into their system Sir.We know have full control over
their weapons system,"
"Retract their main guns and point them to their other
ships...done...FIRE!,"I ordered.
Bang..Boom...Blang, a series of explosion followed one after another, Enemy
ships suddenly began to explode echoing the theory of 'Domino Effect'.
Emergency Capsules compact with survivors were jettisoned off the ill-stricken
enemy ships. Those who were left behind just waited for the last moment, A
plunge of total darkness...Death awaits them.
"Send Response teams to save survivors," I ordered.
I looked around and was greeted by the most horrendous scene ever witnessed
by man. Dead bodies with lost limbs, eyeballs jutting out from their eye
socket, their intestines ripped of and their rib cage practically dangling at
the side of their body was just a few of many other things witnessed by me.
Any sane person would feel disgusted and might probably throw up at the
sight of those bodies. I'm different for I'm a soldier...a person who has been
in numerous war. Nevertheless I pray silently for the restless souls. Before
retiring to my quarters...I reminisced the day and silently hope that perpetual
peace will once again be restored in this troubled section of the universe.
Then again....
