It's the early twenty-fourth century, and life is good in the village of
Garth.
The Family of Man, an oppressive religious group, was driven out twenty
years before. The age of industrial pollution is over. People are enjoying
their freedom quietly in the low-technology, cooperative community.
Morgan Parvati, a student of religion, and Ivor Tread, a sculptor, are
savoring their life and love together.
Then everything changes when a spaceship carrying incomprehensible aliens
arrives and they seal off the village from the outside world and alter the
climate to suit their exotic biology. The aliens take the men and children away
for unknown reasons, leaving the women to fend for themselves in the strangely
altered environment.
Morgan and the other women of Garth must struggle to survive the occupation,
including the ever-present threat of Gorse, the alien leader who takes a
special interest in Morgan and from whom she must hide and protect her new-born
baby - by any means necessary.
The themes of love, loss, and spiritual growth are intertwined as Morgan
struggles to satisfy Gorse's strange desire for knowlege and confront the alien
challenge to her life and beliefs.
