Allegory (Book Excerpt)

I step off the last clover onto land and gaze into this enchanting forest.

I shout out loud to myself, "Good God, this appears to be something you would see in a fairy tale such as Sleeping Beauty! In that tale, the prince goes lurking into the forest to find his lover; the Sleeping Beauty I seek is answers. But nothing makes sense here, so far."

In the distance I see men dressed up as knights. I look closer and see that they are in fact knights, but dressed up wearing cards with the symbol of the four of hearts and the ace of spades on their uniforms. They are carrying M-16 machine guns as their form of weaponry. They seem to be the authority in this land, a police force or an army-I’m not quite sure. Examining closer, I see one of the knights has a tattoo engraved on his right arm. My God, that is a Nazi symbol! But how is that possible? WWII ended over 53 years ago and the Allies defeated the Nazis. Somehow these card knights are emulating those savages. This is absolutely ludicrous. From abroad I hear that weird song being chanted once again, "Whooo eeee whooo." Emerging out of the waterfall are the little men I had previously seen, but they are not just little men. They are dwarfs carrying axes and swords on their left legs with pistol holders on their right legs. They are formed in a very well organized legion with the shortest of dwarfs in the frontline assembly, medium-height ones in the middle, and the tallest in the back of the legion. One dwarf strikes my attention in particular; he is carrying a red flag. I look closer at this flag and discover that it is the old Soviet Union Communist flag. Both sides stare at one another, motionless; something is bound to happen.

The dwarf carrying the Communist flag motions to his front men to kneel; they do so as the middlemen open fire at the Nazi knights. Bang! An explosion transpires with several of the Nazi knights dropping dead. A war is underway, and I am in the core of this mayhem. Gunfire, grenades, and explosions-this seems like World War II. On both sides men are dying; nothing but sheer anarchy has ensued in this land of fables.

A Communist dwarf sneaks behind one of the knights and pulls a sword from his left thigh and slices his throat. He then repeatedly stabs at the dead knight’s eyes, pulling them out of their sockets and placing them into the knight’s mouth while the knight’s body begins to twitch from extreme pain. The dwarf then takes his sword and slices the thorax area of the knight and pulls out his lung just for good measure. He stands above the knight and utters with a raspy voice, "Hail to the Red Square and Stalin." My recollection hits me and tells me that Stalin was once the leader of the Soviet Union, a tyrant who massacred millions.

What on earth? These people live like fairy tales and emulate these two political ideologies for some unknown reason. They seek power; power that corrupts absolutely, those glory-seeking individuals who will ultimately destroy the very existence of humanity. They have made themselves into something that I find incomprehensible, and somehow I feel my world has long vanished and I am the sole survivor of my ancient civilization. I must piece this puzzle together and recollect all of these ideologies and fairy tale stories.
