Allegory (Book Excerpt) by Tony Vogiantzis
Page 6 of 6 The laughter is coming from the dark reaches of the forest, but it feels
like someone is behind me. I quickly turn around; nothing. This appears to be
some kind of practical joke. Then again, "Heeeheeeheee." Standing with extreme
caution I know I am not alone.
A high-pitched voice utters, "Don’t be afraid, love will mend
you, don’t ever sleep, you’ll be dead, heeeheeeheee."
I respond with fear in my voice and I stutter, "Show yourself,
where are you?"
"You show yourself pretty lad, heeheehee," taunts the voice of
what sounds like a young child.
"You want to play then, come out and let us embrace."
This pink illusion appears before my very eyes. It’s a pink
cat with black stripes with a smile that could kill.
I shout in total shock, "You must be dearly joking, it is the
cat from Alice in Wonderland emerging before my very eyes!"
The pink cat says, "I am Lopis the devious cat. Heeeheeeheee,
you are doomed like your ancient civilization; there is no escape from this
world, heeeheeeheee."
"Where am I? Who am I? What year is it? What are you?"
"The year does not matter here fool, nothing ever matters,
nothing at all, you are to be destroyed. Heeeheeeheee."
"I am seeking answers. I am not from here, tell me who I am."
"They are coming for you."
"Who is coming? Those savages?"
"Heeeheeehee, they are coming."
"Who? What are you? Tell me!"
"Goodbye, you will find yourself in extreme agony,
heeeheeeheee."
The cat Lopis vanishes into the forest. Just like the cat in
Alice in Wonderland, this one is annoying. The cat speaks in riddles
with no logical sentence making any type of sense, not even a direct answer; it
is all rhetoric much like a fable. I grin and laugh, rubbing my head in total
disbelief; I still find myself without any answers or hope in this fantasyland.
Things are so strange it seems like one big nightmare. I lie
down and think what my next move will be in this odd world, a world where it is
fantasy and these people and creatures are using allegory or some kind of
satire to copy the ancient civilization. It appears mankind has taken on a new
form that is far beyond reality. Somehow they have duplicated the Nazi and
Communist regimes of Germany and the former Soviet Union. There appears to be
no sign of law or order in this world, only chaos. Fables yes, but a nightmare
version of fairy tales. As a child I read make-believe stories to get away from
the reality of life, from the everyday problem humans endure with families,
with lovers, at the workplace; failures in life, failures in living up to the
expectations of people…the list can go on. But this fantasyland is like no
other; it is frightening. The night has come; darkness fills the sky with a
moon that shines like no other moon I have ever seen before. Pure white bone,
it feels as though I can reach up into the sky and touch it. I am going to
sleep now and hopefully wake up from this nightmare.
