Shipwrecked and alone (4 ratings)
         by Mark Wells

Isolated on an island I sit,
My mind in turmoil thoughts starts to burn.
Hunger and pain images lit,
Will I survive or ever return?
Vessel washed up as drift wood on the shore,
Lost to the wave crests that impaled.
Ripping the belly open to the core,
I tried to steady the tiller but failed.
The sun now luster prisms of light,
Caressing the gentle spray was rain.
Hastening into the trees I felt this was right,
I had to build a shelter; I shut out the voracity and pain.
Banana leaves made ideal plates for a meal,
Collecting dry wood I ignored the flies that sting.
If only I had been able to steady the keel,
As I worked birds warbled others started to sing.
Soon a crude shelter I erected to lay upon,
Am I alone on this island? Am I the only man?
If it was inhabited where has they all gone?
Animals grunted, startled and ran.
This shelter kept me dry under the feathery green towers,
Large shells made ideal cups for water to fill.
Accumulating a few more along the creamy sands hold ample showers,
Food was trickier I had never needed to physically kill.
An anchor my eyes pick out from once a boat that sailed,
Maybe on a pirate mission secretly sent.
There crew now only spumes wails,
Souls that will flotsam never content.
I felt so desolate, a needle in a haystack, so alone,
I had to keep sane; I had to keep a rational head.
So far I was alive even if I was on my own,
A storm front was festering near more thoughts of dread.
Cockles and Winkles I scooped out to eat,
Abundance of crags made them easy to get.
Ants I also collected from leaves made into a flat sheet,
Crushing their small forms, the sun dried them and set.
Weather was hot I had been stranded in the month of May,
A crude type of trap I constructed caught a wild hare.
Fire to cook food on was not a problem flint was in abundance during the day,
I didn't venture out at night as the Forrest had perception and the wind almost tares.
I was filled with plans to build another boat, this was my desire,
I had plenty of timber and hard rocks to rebuild.
Beautifully constructed thoughts mingled in the dancing fire.
Prickly fingers drummed down my spine as I huddled quite chilled.
After many hard days I constructed a sort of floating ship.
I was eager to get away from this tropical heat and driving rain.
Collecting enough nourishment and water a smile hit my chaffed lips,
I hope this was worth all the hours I had sweat with exhaustion and pain.
As I board my boat and set out to sea I'm engulfed in a watery dream,
Further I float out into the foreboding mirror like sea.
Schools of fish broke the surface and began to teem,
A whale lifted its head its eyeball seemed to probe right into me.
The billows increased what had the weather in store?
I hoped I would be picked up soon and saved.
I didn't want to fight an endless foamy war,
Or become one with lost souls now flotsam slaves.
Time seemed endless no sign of any boats or islands to see,
Food surplus was running low the voyage was into many days.
Looking up at the heavens would I be spared?
Wispy clouds seemed to open their folds and comforted.
Memories of loved ones and moments shared,
Soon my mind became darkness as my body succumbed to the dead.
Waves swept me under I sunk like a stone,
The water summoned calling me.
Another soul now drifted current blown,
Entrapment secure in the eternal coldness of the sea.
