Wednesday, August 6, 2008 an unintentional slightas with happens with the advancement of age, and the lack of a good proof reader i noticed a grave omission, the lack of mention for george r. r. martin's song ofice andfire series.a game of thrones, a clash of kings, a storm of swords and a feast for crows stand amgoust the giants of epic fantasy literature.
mr martin's fully realizedworld of westerosis no lesser to the land or middle earth in my opinion. the characters vivdly come to life off the pages and more than once i threw the book across the room with surprise at the demise of more than one main character.
i have marked my calander and am avidly awaiting the september release of the fifth book a dance with dragons. if you have not aquainted yourself with the houses of stark, lannister, baratheon and so many more (and my favortite daenerys targaryen) run dont walk to your nearest bookstore or library! Wednesday, August 6, 2008 for your consideration
first off i just want to say a little about myself and why i feel i am qualified to give some pretty good and accurrate advice about books i have read and would like to recommend. i love to read, plan and simple. one of the greatest gifts of mankind, in my estimation is the ability to open up a book, and be transported page after page to new and incrediible worlds inspiried by an author and fueled by our own imaginations. this happened to me for the first time as a young adult, when i read j r r tolkien the hobbit, one weekend during a snowstorm while growing up in buffalo new york thar monday morning i ran to the school library, to read the fellowship of the ring, only to find it out, so i read the two towers, i had to have more. ever since that weekend in 7th grade, i've been hooked.
next i made my father buy me stephen r donaldson's first thomas covenant trilogy lord fouls bane, the illearth war and the power that preserves, thankfully they had been published 10 years earlier, so the wounded land was next rapidly followed by the one tree and white gold weilder. here i must note that in my opinion these are thegreatest books ever written in the epic fantasy genre and how glad i am that mr. donaldson has decided to give us 4 more books, set in the land, ruins of the earth and fatal revenant, if only he would write faster!
the almost endless stream of titles that followed, i can barely remember, but these gems stand out: david eddings the belgariad and malloreon cycles, margret wiess and tracy hickmans dragonlance series; chronicles, legends, war of souls and the new dark disciple trilogy are all stand outs, as well as the kingpriest trilogy, set in the world of krynn. also the death gate series is a tresure as well. robert jordans the wheel of time series, james clements witch gate series, terry brooks, peirs anthony, jacqueline carey the sundering; banewreaker and godslayer(loved loved loved these two)
for any readers who have not discovered these titles yet, or for someone who would like to revisit these tales of theepic struggle between good and evil these are some choice morsels i cant recomment enough.
til next time, enjoy!
