A witch story with an adult theme. The story focuses on a world where witches hold the power and men are used for pleasure and breeding. The society is long lived and their magical strengths are reflected by the colour jewel they acquire in their teens.

There is a dark sensual element that runs through the plot, but it doesn't distract from the story. The characters are interesting, and I found Lucivar and Daemon enthralling, their antics were page turners. The author doesn't shy away from tragedy, which meant there were some raw scenes. But in the end I loved the book and am very much looking forward to the next.

This book captured my interest like nothing else. I was so caught up in their lives that everytime I read the book, I felt like I was in a separate world, and I felt that I knew all of these characters, and that I was one of the people in this book. The world was so backwards from the way we are today, but it also displayed our society in a very talented way! I love this book!

a marvellous read. it captures the spirit. the characters are so lifelike that it is impossible not to feel for them. to hate some to a degree you thought not possible and fall in love with others.you want to read on and on.
the book stops at such a cliffhanger. i wanted to sceam out loud at the unfairness of it all. i read the book and then read it again straight after.
it's a shame the book is so dark and sad. but it does outline the problems of our own society from racism to sexism. Anne Bishop will become one of the great writers in history.
