The Great and Secret Show is the original Matrix, instead of invloving computers, Clive Barker found a way to make the dream world the unknown universe as the Matrix did with the computer world.
I first read this book many years ago and was intrigued and inspired. The detail and conflict that Mr. Barker created was the beginning of an epic fantasy tale. He told the story in a manner that made you believe in the possibilty of the tale he was spinning. I think the greatest testament to the quality of the story is how it begins in a mail room with a dead end job and ends with the same man elevated to the status of a god like being.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to the fantasy drawn intellectual.
