It's funny, because when I read the first book in the series, Prospero's Children, I thought, 'although this is great, it's a little bit darker than the usual fantasy fare', and that goes double for the second book, The Dragon Charmer.

Sometimes, I wondered whether it didn't fit more into the 'horror' genre!

So much of the novel centres on notions of evil in this world and the other, and there are certainly fewer intimations of the legendary wonder & beauty of ancient Atlantis, where the heroine originates.

Still, the characters are well drawn, and I'm only about halfway through it, so maybe it'll yet surprise me.

Jan Seigel is definitely a very talented author though. I look forward to her next book.

I have not seen any other reviews for this author, which is a shame. This authors writing style is easy and flows nicely. There is nothing that puts me off more than a complicated book. I have not read the book that precedes this one, but that didn't matter. The story picked up in such a way as that did not matter. The characters where interesting, especially Fern and of course there is a dragon, but it doesn't feature that much unfortunately. If you want a charming read, then this is a story for you.
