For The Love Of Evil
It's quite good fantasy with actual events from history thrown in. A young wizard is hunted in medieval Europe during the Inquisition. He then spends a span of years posing as a Franciscan monk to avoid execution. Occasionally using magic to help others. (Its been years since I read the book forgive me for not going into more detail.) During his travels he commits sin after taking the oath of a monk. Thus his soul becomes sought after by the Devil himself. Due to luck and great fortune he not only survives the Devil's attempt to take his soul - he kills the Devil in the process! Having killed the Devil our protag must now assume the position! The book goes on to tell the main story of the series, but from the view of our protag "The Current Devil". All the books in the series have an overarching storyline told from the perspective of that book's Incarnation of Immortality. In all the other books "The Current Devil" is portrayed as the bad guy. Its really fun to see whats behind his machinations in this book. You might find a little sympathy for the devil.
