I don't mind this book. The idea is good and the way he pulls it off and gets you in is sound. There is a host of characters and they all give something to the storyline. I do have one major problem with it though. Everybody in it is extremely luck. Not just your run of the mill win a few hands of poker luck. This is the sort of luck that you win the lottery twice, in the same week. They all just happen to come upon the things they need to continue living. Plus they just happen to stumble upon the people with the required skills. The odds of all these characters coming together at this one time and in the right place is staggering. He does actually mention in the book that they are extremely lucky, but truthfully this doesn’t excuse it. I liked the idea of the book, and the whole starting society again with no technology and no safety net is great. But by god they shouldn’t have been so lucky, maybe if more of them died or they worked that bit harder to get what they needed I wouldn’t keep coming back to this one point. But apart from that a very good and sound book. That and the pitcure at the back of the book makes him look like a bit of a prat.
