My first foray into Marie Brennan was a pleasant surprise to be honest. I have always been a fan of historical adventure/fantasy and so when I saw a cheap copy of this I thought I would give it a go.
The plot is both the strength and weakness of this book. The history is really detailed and you really feel like you are in Elizabethan England (the plot is about a normal Elizabethan England under the reign of Qn Elizabeth, living in parallel with a faerie England ruled by faerie Queen Invidiana). However, sometimes the detail and the flashbacks mean the plot moves a bit slowly as the reader is constantly being diverted in order to embellish the overall arc of the storyline. Still, the characters are really strong and the reader can really visualise the faery court which Marie paints in great detail.
Overall, a good start and I look forward to other faerie/human stories from this author. I am glad I took a punt on book.
