Submitted by Mike Costa (May 27, 2002)This was a very engaging book, but very heavy on science - especially quantam physics. The story happens about 75 years in the future and for the last 35 or so years, the stars have been invisible. They call it the bubble effect and the story sort of revolves around its existence. The main character is a private detective named Nick who is hired to find a brain-damaged patient named Laura who has vanished from her mental hospital room. His chase leads him to join an underground conspiracy, be involved in a discovery which can manipulate eigenstates and question the nature of his existence. The storyline dragged at times trying to explain a lot of the basics of quantam probabilities, but it was necessary for the reader to understand this. As long as you're not turned off by the detailed science part of the book, you'll probably like this story.
