David Gemmell once again brings us another GREAT tale in the Heroic Fantasy genre. Set in the cold and inhospitable highlands this is an intriguing story about an oppressed people; which has not known any victories for decades since their clannish armies were severely defeated by the organized and ruthless forces of the "Outlanders". But worse is yet to come; nothing is as dangerous as a huge war machine, and a ruthless provincial ruler; with the need for further glories and conquest where no new lands nor any new enemies can be found. A gripping and cruel tale about personal bravery, humanity's capability for cruelty; and the will of resistance in people who has been wronged. Enthralling characters; and a well written story makes this a book worth reading. Beware though it is not for the faint hearted, and should be in the category "adult" fantasy.
