Submitted by Maxine (Jun 20, 2002)After having read the Assassin series I could not wait to pick up and read the first book of her new series, which also features FitzChivalry, and the world of the Six Duchies.
I suppose that one cannot make a definitive review on the book because the other 2 aren't out yet, but after reading just this first one, I have to say that it was amazing.
There were some flaws, I found it to be slightly predictable, but I suppose it had to be to make way for the more interesting things in books 2 and 3.
All in all, however, a magnificent read and it looks as though Robin Hobb has written herself another book as good or, (and when all 3 are out) perhaps better series than the Assassin one.
For all the lovers and readers of Robin Hobb out there- pick this book up. You won't be disappointed. The book once again centers around Fitzchivalry, who is now older, less physically able, but also much wiser. What makes the book so good is Hobb's characters are all unique in that they have different strengths, personalities and all of them have Flaws and rely on witts and ingenuity to get them through tough situations. In addition, Hobb's world is simple and easy to follow, so the reader has an easier time getting into the characters. One thing that I like about Hobb's books is that each one is distinguishable from the other. Unlike other authors, like Jordon, whose books just seem to be run-ons of the last novel. For similar authors read J.V Jones.
