Page 1 of 3 Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Submitted by LauraLeia (Jan 13, 2006)Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is a fantastic author. Of the 3 books in the Kiesha'Ra series, i think Hawksong is the best. It introduces the reader to a whole new world of shapeshifters - the avians and the serpiente. It starts off with a show of compassion from an avian princess to a dying serpient prince, which is quite unheard of in avian society. The story then goes on to an uneasy truce between the two peoples and how Danica and Zane learned to trust each other. Throughout, the author's detailed story-telling and sense of humour made Hawksong a truly enjoyable read. There are a lot of things I like about her books, but mostly I love this whole separate world she has created. I love how she shows the emotional struggle Danica is having and the way the avians react to her decison.
What I also liked was that the cause of the war was intentionally left out, not only to leave room for the future volumes, but also because it gives the reader a chance to think, instead of just throwing out all the details which (I think) would be somewhat boring.
When it came to the subject of hatred and war, I thought the book was pretty realistic. The two races hating each other for thousands of years and all of the things that led to show that the road to peace is difficult when you are dealing with a past like that. I just thought that she showed the characters emotions and such very well
I do miss the vampires somewhat, but the shapeshifters have an interesting world, too. I was not disappointed. Submitted by Llewellyne (Jul 10, 2005)I LOVED this book. Even though I love to read and will mostly accept any book, this one really captured my attention. In the beginning when I checked out 'Hawksong' I was just in a rush to get at least a book, along with 5 other books, so I wouldn't die of boredom. My only other reason for choosing this book, besides dying of boredom, was that it had an interesting name and cover. By the end of the week though 'Hawksong' was the only book I read out of all my other ones! The characters and their traits simply amazed me! The plot was magnificent and I couldn't wait to read the sequel. I even had my dad to try to get the whole series(so far). 'Hawksong' is truly one of the best fantasies I have ever read! Submitted by Julie Stevens (Apr 02, 2005)I found this book unlike any other. It became my instant favorite in the first few chapters. I love the character development as Danica learns to trust the serpientes and Zane. She starts out as any other in the Avian world would, filled with a learned distrust of the serpents. But she forces herself to overcome that fear for the good of her people. War had torn both their families, and they were able to forgive. Also the description in this book was absolutley superb. It painted a picture of life in war, and the horror and sorrow of it. You could understand why Danica was willing to do the unheard of to stop it.
Hawksong also put a new spin on the serpent world. Most stories you read portray snakes as sneaky, always lying and having a back-up plan to turn the course of the fighting around. You go into the book thinking that, and just waiting for someone to turn. It shows true sincerity in snakes insted.
I finished this book in a single day, and almost cried when it had to end. (even though the ending was great)I ABSOLUTLEY reccomend this book to anyone who will listen. Submitted by Brenna (Feb 20, 2005)I feel that Hawksong is a definite wonder! I enjoyed the story to unmeasurable proportions! There is no other way to describe how in love I am with this book! The characters came alive from the very first sentence and even after I have finished the book, they are still lingering over me. I absolutely adore Zane, he is the best character I have ever read about. The way he is described and the way he lives in my mind even now just makes my heart stop. Danica simply dazzles me, her loving nature, so unlike that of the Avians is marvelous. The whole plot of the story was amazing. I have read so many books, (I am a huge reader) and I always seem to find books where I can predict the ending. But in Hawksong, I was surprised to find that some aspects of the ending I had not even thought of. It was wonderful! Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has gained a fan for life. As a fellow writer and lover of literature, I can only ask that she continues her expressive writing. Especially The Kiesha'ra. If I do not hear a whole lot more about Zane and Danica, I will not continue to draw breath! She has hooked me into the fantasy world of Avians, Serpentes and shapeshiftes alike. I am desperate for more of the magic and hope that she seriously considers writing a long line of this seriese.
